VIALTER L. SIEWERS, OF WINSTON-SALEI/I, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR TO THE MALINE IVIILLS COMPANY, OF FORSYTI-I COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, A CORPORA- TION OF NORTH CAROLINA.
LADY S UNDERG-ARMENT.
Application filed. June 20, 1923. Serial No. 646,639.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known, that I, WVALTER L. Srnwnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vinston-Salem, in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Undergarments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in ladys' undergarment and has for its ob ject to provide a. garment having short leg portions, the garment to be made essentially from tubular knitted material, which has been slit in a novel manner, hereinafter described, for the insertion of gussets and a connecting member between the front and back parts of the garment to constitute the leg portions.
The various novel features of the invention will appear from the detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is an elevation showing the main tubular body which constitutes the major part of the garment. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the garment showing the same in its completed state with the side gussets and a connecting member. Fig. 3 is another view of a completed garment, but showing the same turned up at the bottom to more fully disclose the style of connection between the front and back of the garment. Fig. 4 is a modified form of the invention as to the location of the gussets which give the lower part of the garment a flaring effect. Fig. 5 is the blank or tubular member from which the garment in Fig. 4. is fashioned. Fig. 6 is a cross-section on line 66 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a cross-section on line 7-7 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 8 is a plan view of one of the insertions made in the garment.
In the drawings numeral 1 designates the conventional shoulder straps usually provided in womens garments; 2 the body portion proper at the top of which the shoulder 1 straps are attached; and 3 a. draw-string at the top of the garment.
The body 2 is slit at its diametrically opposite sides as shown at 5 and there is also provided a centrally disposed slit 6, all of the slits extending from the bottom of the body 2 to points intermediate the ends of the same. The slit 6 is made in both the front and back of the garment.
A relatively narrow strip or band 7 of substantially the same width throughout, is secured at its side edges to the front and back of the body 2 at the slits 6 thereof. By making the strip or band 7 of substantially uniform width there is no waste of material and a perfectly satisfactory garment in every respect is obtained.
In order to provide ample leg room gussets 8 are inserted in the body 2 at the slits 5, these gussets being of triangular form and may have the apex pointed or rounded as desired. The pointed form of gusset is shown in Figs. 2 and 3 while the rounded form is shown in Fig. 4.
In the preferred form of the invention the slits 5 are preferably made at the opposite sides of the body 2 in line with the arms of the body of the wearer, but the invention also contemplates the slitting of the body 2 on' lines located in the back part of the garment.
This latter form of the invention is shown in Fig. 5, the slits being indicated at 5.
In this type of garment the front there-- of would not show any seams where the gussets are inserted and will also give a fuller effect at the back of the garment.
lVhat I claim is:
A garment comprising a. tubular body split in the middle at front and back from the bottom thereof for a short distance thereabove, a folded strip of uniform width having one side edge attached to the edges of the slit in the front of the body and having its other side edge attached to the edges of the slit in the back of the body, said strip constituting a connecting portion between the front and back of the garment body, and means for widening the said garment body from the bottom thereof towards its top comprising tria-ngulay-shaped gussets inserted into said body at either side of said strip, said gussets having their sides slopinguniformly from the bottom to the apex. 10
In testimony whereof I al'fix my signature.
WALTER SIEXVERS.
