UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
CHARLES R. SIPES, OF ARKANSASOITY, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVES.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. ;l80,279, dated July 25, 1876; application filed J une 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. SIPEs, of Arkansas City, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Stove, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved stove on line 0 0, Fig. l; and Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same on Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to improvements on a class of stoves known as the Tod stove, by which the objectionable escape of the smoke in the same, when the doors are opened, may be avoided, and also a convenient foot-I est or rail be provided.
The invention consists of a Tod-stove, with an additional flue and damper at the highest part to prevent-the escape of smoke on opening the door, and of a swinging footrail hinged to the lowerpart of the stove.
In the drawing, A represents a so-called Tod stove, which is made of oval or other shape, and with a system of dues passing around the sides and bottom to the smokepipe B.
These stoves are made with the smoke-outlet a little above the center of the stove, and have the upper part of the door opening at a higher point than the smoke-outlet, so that the smoke escapes into the room when the door is opened more or less. For the purpose of avoiding this I attach to the saddle O, at the top of the stove, asecond smoke-outlet, a,
and connect the same by a flue or pipe, b, with the pipe B. A damper, d, is placed in the. connecting-flue b, and weighted at the part above the center pivot, so that the damper is retained in closed position when shut. A projecting pin, 6, at the lower partof damper d, secures, in connection with the weighted part, the open position of the damper, and also serves to prevent the swinging of the damper beyond the vertical closed position.
The stove is prevented from smoking by simply opening the damper, when the door is opened, so that the smoke is allowed to escape with great facility at the highest point. This damper may also be used when the fire is to be started, as the smoke can then be passed directly to the chimney Without passing through the circumferential flues. I
The lower front part of the stove A is provided with a cast foot-rail, D, that is hinged by end lugs to perforated bearings of the stove-bases to be swung up out of the way or swung down for use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- 7 1. The combination, with stove having smoke-outlet above center and saddle C at top, of the pipe B and smoke-outlet a, connected by a flue, I), having damper therein, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, witha smoke-flue at the highest point of the stove, of a damper weighted at the upper part, and having a projecting pin at the lower part, substantially as set forth.
CHARLES R. sIPns.
