COOKING-STOVE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,502, dated April 11, 1848.

- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GILBERT GEEK, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in the combination of the apparatus well known as the Summer Arrangement with the cooking-stove and the dampers connected therewith, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes them from all other things before known and of the manner of making, con structing, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section through the summer arrangment, fire chamber, and oven; Fig. 2, is a portion of the front of the stove showing the openings between the summer arrangement and flues together with the dampers that cover them; Fig. 3 is an isometrioal view of the whole apparatus.

The same letters indicate like parts in all the figures.

The nature of my invention consists.in the manner of connecting the summer arrangement with the stove so that the draft therefrom can be readily turned either into the fire chamber and thence follow the flue around the oven or into the eXit pipe direct without imparting heat to any part of the stove, the dampers being so arranged as to revolve and cover either of the openings at pleasure.

The construction is as follows: The fire chamber (A), Fig. 1, has a recess of considerable capacity under the grate as shown at (B) same figure the smoke and heat passes over the top of the oven, down the back, under the bottom, and up the front (C) where the pipe leading to the chimney is connected at (D) the arrows indicate this course; another opening (f) also leads from the fire chamber directly into the stove pipe this can be closed by an ordinary damper.

The summer arrangement (E) is connected with the stove in the usual Way, but on the side of the ascending flue. In the front plate of the stove when this arran ement is connected there are three ho es clearly shown in Fig. 2; the center hole (d) is connected by a short pipe with the recess underneath the fire chamber and is distinctly represented in Fig. 1, where it is marked center pipe, it crosses the ascending flue and cuts off any communication with it from the summer arrangement through the aperture ((Z), thus when the two outer 0 enings (b, b) are closed the smoke &c. rom the summer fire passes through the fire chamber of the stove and thence through the same flue as that fire chamber around the oven as before describedthe two holes on (1)) each side of the center one open directly into the flue, and when open conduct the heat and smoke directly off without in any degree heating the stove; between the center flue (d) and each of the outer ones (1)) there is a damper (a) pivoted, which, when revolved outward, closes the two outer openings (6, b) but when turned inward they meet and close the center opening by this arrangement of the summer fixture with'the flues it will be seen that all the heat can be kept from the stove as it enters the ascending flue near its point of exit thus giving out no more heat into the room in which it is used than an ordinary portable furnace.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of the summer arrangement with a stove having its flues arranged as herein described so that the heat therefrom can either be thrown through the fire entirely around the oven, or be made to pass off through the ascending flue without heatifng the body of the stove as herein fully set orth.
