IMPROVEMENT'IN M INERS LAMPS.

The Object of my invention is to hold firmly in place the lid of a miners lamp by the use of my spring, which I place vertically along the side of the lamp, extending above the top of the lid, with the latch of the spring bearing over and down upon it.

Figure 1 represents a side view of an ordinary lamp used by miners, with my lid holde'r attached. Fig. 2 is a front View of a lamp, showing my attachment. 'Fig. 3 represents-a side view of my lid-holder detached from the lamp.

A represents the spring part of the same. B represents the keeper, and O the latch of the spring. My spring is cut or stamped out of ordinary brass or Other suitable material,

forming in one piece the spring, keeper, and

latch of about twenty-three wire-gage in thickness, and of suitable size. It is then stamped into the shape, as shown in Fig. 2. The spring is then soldered to the lamp in such position as to allow the latch of the spring to fall over 180,258, dated July 25, 1876 application filed 11, 1876.

and upon the top of the lid at D, as shown in Fig. 2. The latch of my spring is formed by simply doubling up a small portion of the main stem, and it is rendered fixed by solder- When the lamp-lid is open the spring is intended to be close up to the side of the lamp, which position gives it the quality of a spring when the lamp is being shut. When the lamplid is being closed down, it strikes the latch of thus forcing it outward, and as the lid passes below the spring closes in and upon it, thus clutching and holding it firmly in place.

I form my attachment in one piece for the reason that it is more economical in the making and attaching Of the same to the lamp. It is not necessary that the spring should he thus formed;. but it is sut'ficient for the purpose Of my invention that a spring, latch, or other device he vertically attached to the lamp for the holding of the lid firmly in place when closed. i

What I claim is I A miners lamp, with a spring-lid holding device, substantially as described, as a new article of manufacture.
