Description

Patented Apr. 21, 1931 sA'rEs' WILFORD G. BARTENFELD, 0F LORAIN, OHIO CHANNEL CONSTRUCTION FOR THE SIDES OF THE TANKS OF VESSEIS Application filed June a, 1929. Serial No. 368,177.
. This invention relates to channel construction for the sides of the tanks or hoppers of vessels, and has for its principal object to provide a practical and economical construction for the sides of the tanks or hoppers of vessels by using channels.
Another object of the invention is to arrange the channels with their flanges extending outwardly and riveting the same together at their flanges thereby providing a rigid construction and preventing leakage at the rivets into the hopper.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for properly supporting said channels and bracing the same.
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of a vessel taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 2 and illustrating the side of the tank or hopper constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a view looking outwardly from the vessel and towards the side of the hopper as illustrated in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view illustrating a modification of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the side or shell of a vessel constructed of longitudinally extending steel channels, 2 the side shell frame to which said channels are clipped as at 3, 4 transversely extending floor plates, and 5 longitudinals. The top of the tank or the bottom of the hopper is constructed of longitudinally extending inverted channels 6, which rest upon and are clipped at 7 to the floor plates 4. The side of the hopper is constructed of vertically arranged and preferably inclined channels 8, which are riveted together at their outwardly extending flanges 9 as indicated at 10. The side hopper channels 8 are supported at their upper ends by inwardly extending flanged plates 11, which are riveted at 12 to the side shell frame 2 and to the flanges 9 of said channels as indicated at 13. The lower ends of the side hopper channels 8 are fixed to the floor plates 5 by brackets 14;, and a longitudinally extending angle 15 connects said channel to the top of the outer side tank channel 16, the outer depending flange of which has been removed. From the drawings and description it will be readily seen that the sides of the tank or hopper of a vessel may be constructed of channels either extending vertically or longitudinally, that this construction is rigid though comparatively light in weight, and
that no rivets enter the hopper and therefore' there is no danger of leakage into the hopper at the rivets.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a channel construction for the sides of the hoppers of vessels, the combination of channels, the channels having their flanges fixed together, means supporting said channels and said means being fixed to the flanges of said channels.
2. In a channel construction for the sides of the hoppers of vessels, the combination of channels, the channels having their flanges extending outwardly, the flanges of the channels being fixed together, means supporting said channels, and said means being fixed to the flanges of said channels.
3. In a channel construction for the sides of the hoppers of vessels, the combination of channels, the channe s having their flanges extending outwardly, the flanges of the channels being fixed together, the channels extending vertically, means supporting said channels, and said means being fixed to the flanges of said channels.
4. In a channel construction for the sides of the hoppers of vessels, the combinationof channels, the channels having their flanges extending outwardly, the flanges of the channels being fixed together, the channels extending vertically, means for supporting the upper ends of the channels, means for supporting the lower ends of the channels, and said means being fixed to the flanges of said channels. 5. In a channel construction for the sides of the hoppers of vessels, the combination of channels, the channels having their flanges extending outwardly, the flanges of the channeis being fixed together, the channels extending vertically, a plate, the plate being fixed to the flanges of the upper ends of said channels, abrace, the brace being fixed to the flanges of the lower ends of said channels, and a brace fixed to the flanges of said channels intermediate said plate and said bracket.
6. Ina channel construction for the sides of the hoppers of vessels, the combination of the shell of a vessel, side shell frames, the shell being fixed to the side shell frames, floors plates, the side shell frames being fixed to the floor plates,'a plate,the plate being fixed to the upper ends of said side shell frames, channels, the channels having their flanges extending outwardly, the flanges of the channels being fixed together, the flanges of the channels being connected to said plate, and a bracket fixed to the flanges of the lower end of said channels and to said floor'plate.
