UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHANNEL CONSTRUCTION FOR THE SIDES AND TOPS 0F TANKS OF VESSELS.
Application filed August 2, 1927.
This invention relates to channel construe tion for the sides and tops of the tanks or the sides and bottoms of the hoppers of vessels, and has for its main object to pro vide means whereby the sides and tops of the tanks or the sides and bottoms of the hoppers may be constructed oil channels in apractical and economical manner. The flanges of the channels not only provide a rigid construction but leakage into the hopper at the rivets as in the usual plate construction is avoided as no rivets enter the hopper.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for properly supporting said side channels and bracing the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for rigidly supporting the channels forming the top of the tank or the bottom of the hopper consisting of alternate high floors and beams instead of the usual high floors and longitudinals, thereby reducing weight and saving expense in the sub stitution of beams for alternate high floors.
1th the above and other objects in view as will he clearly understood, the invention will be hereinafter fully described as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will. be distinctly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corres iionding parts.
Figure 1 illustrates the transverse sec tion of the hull of a vessel, taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 3 and looking at one of the high floors, the sides and top 01 the tank and the sides and bottom of the hopper being constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a similar view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3 and looking at one of the floor beams,
Fig. 3 illustrates a fragmental portion of? a plan sectional view taken on line of Fig. 1,
4i is a similar view taken on line 14 01 Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the hull of the vessel is of the usual construction consisting of the external side shell 1, the bottom shell 2, the center keelson 8 and the side keelson 4: and intermediate side keel- Serial No. 210,082.
This invention resides in the employment of standard steel channels 6, which are riveted and extend longitudinally oi the vessel and are connected together at their flanges by rivets 7, to form the top of the tank and the bottom of the hopper between the side keelsons 45. Also in the employment. of standard steel channels 8, which are arranged vertically and inclined, and are connected together at their outwardly extending flanges by rivets 9, to form the inner sides of the side tank and the sides of the hopper. The tank top channels 6 are supported by their downwardly extending flanges resting upon the upper flanged edges 11 of transverse tioor plates 12 extending from the center keelson 3 to the intermediate side keelsons 5, and similar flanged plates 13 extend from the intermediate side keelsons 5 to the side keelsons 1. The floor plates 12 and 13 are connected to said keelsonslby vertically arranged angle bars indicated by 1 1, 15 and 16, or in any other suitable manner. Clips, indicated by 17, connect the top channels 6 to the floor plates 12 and 13.
By G1'I1P l('J Y111g the channel 6 in place of the sun] plates to form the tank top, less support for the tank top is necessary, and there fore instead of arranging the floor plates 12 and 13 the usual distance apart, they are spaced twice that distance, and intermediate thereof or substituted for the ones omitted, are arranged beams 18 and 1!) formed of channels, the beamslS extending from the center keelson 3 to the intermediate kcelsons 5, and the beams 19 from said intermediate keelsons to the side keelsons 4t. )racket plates 20 connect the inner ends of the beams 18 to the center keelson 3 and support the same from the bottom shell 2, and suitable gusset plates 21 connect the outer ends of said beams to the intermediate keelsons 5. Gusset plates 22 connect one end of the beams 19 to the intermediate keelsons 5, and angle bars 23 and gusset plates 2% con nect the other ends of said beams to the side keelsons 1. Arranged between the side keel sons 1 and the external side shell 1 in transverse alignment with the floor plates 12 and 18 and the beams 18 and 19 are vertical plates indicated by 25, and the inner ends of these plates are connected to said side keelsons by vertical angle bars 26. The outer ends of the plates 25 are connected. to the lower ends oi vertical channels 27. Suitable stringers 28 and 29 rest upon and are "connected to the upper edges of the vertical plates 25. Gusset plates 30 connect the lower ends of the side tank channels 8 to the vertical floor plates 25 and main deck stringer bracket plates 31 arranged at suitable spaced intervals are connected to the vertical channels 27 at 32 and to the upper ends of said side-tank channels at 33. For supporting and strengthening the central portions of the side tank channels 8 against indentation,
braces 34 connected to the flanges thereof by gusset plates 35 and to the vertical channels '27 at 36 are provided. The braces 3d are arranged below the plates 31, and stringers -37 and 38 are connected to the upper edges of said braces for strengthening same. c From the drawmgs and description, 1t is obvious that there are advantages in constructing the sides and top of the tank and the sides and bottom oi the hopper ct ves-' 'sels of channels as disclosed. It will be understood thatslight changes in the de- .tails of construction may be made within the scope of the claims.
Having fully described my invention What I claim is:
