The object of my invention is to provide a governor of simple, durable and inexpensive construction.
A further object of my invention is to provide a governor of centrifugal type which may be conveniently mounted adjacentto the front end of an engine and which may be readily adjusted from the outside of the governor.
Still a further object of my invention is to provide a governor which may be secured to the face of the magneto driving gear and which requires no rotating hearings to secure proper functioning of the device.
Still a further object of my invention is to provide a governor having a pair of centrifugal weights, a longitudinally movable member actuated by these weights, and a single bearing ball placed between this member and an operating arm so that when the weights and movable member are rotated, the ball hearing will form the bearing between the rotating member and the relatively stationary operating arm.
Still a further object of my invention is to provide governor having a pair of centrifugal weights in position to move oppositely and outwardly from a central axis, a cup shaped member partially enclosing these weights, and having an annular rib or bead formed near the rim portion of this cup shaped member to form a stop forthe centrifugal weights so that these weights will be free to return to their inoperative position without bending against the rim portion of the cup member.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the arrangement, construction and combination of the-various parts of my improved device, as described in the specification, claimed in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: V

Referring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to illustrate generally the engine portion of a tractor having a radiator 11, fuel tank 12, and front wheels 13. The engine 10 is provided with an exhaust manifold and pipe 14. An intake manifold 15 is also provided, and an air intake conduit 16 connects this intake manifold with an air washer 17.
The exhaust manifold 14 is of the type known as ahot spot manifold and is provided with a fuel vaporizer 18 having a gas pipe 19 leading to the intake manifold where the carburetionof the fuel takes place. That portion of the intake manifold, adjacent to the point at which the gas line 19 connects therewith is termed the carburetor 20 and is provided with a conventional butterfly valve, not shown in the drawings. A manual control rod 21 is connected with this butterfly valve to thereby manually control the flow of gas to the engine.
A second control rod 22 is also connected with this butterfly valve in such a manner that the rotation of the rod 21 is always dependent upon the rod 22. hen the rod 22 is rotated to what is known as the open position, the rod 21 may be manually rotatedto thereby rotate the butterfly valve and control the flow of gas to the manifold 15. However, when the rod 22 is rotated to the closed position it closes the butterfly valve independent of the rod 21 to thereby control the flow of gas to the engine independent of the manual operating rod. The rod 22 is rotated by the applicants improved governor while the rod 21 is rotated by a lever adjacent tothe steering wheel of the tractor. 3
The front end of the engine 10 is provided with a plate 23 having an extension 24 to which the front axle is secured and upon by the front end plate 23.
The gear is provided with a shaft 26 formed integral therewith and which is mounted in a bearing 27 formed in the en- 'gine 10. A coupling 28 is provided on the rear end of the shaft 26 to drive a magneto or distributor for the tractor.
A governor drive shaft 29 is secured to the forward side of the gear 25 by means of a flange 30 and screws 31. This shaft eX- tends forwardly from the gear 25 through an opening in the front end plate 23. A cup shaped guard member 32 is also secured to the gear 25 by means of the screws 31 and entends forwardly in position to partially house the governor weights. A pair of oil scoops 61 are punched in the rim portion of the cup 32 so that when the cup is rotated oil may be scooped up by the scoops 61 to thereby lubricate the working parts of the device.
The shaft 29 is provided with an axial bore 33 in its outer end. A driving pin 34 extends through the shaft 29 transversely of the opening 33 near the outer end of the shaft.
1 A pair of governor weights 35' are rotatably mounted on this driving pin 34 by means of an ear 36 on each weight. The inner sides of the weights 35, adajcentto the shaft 29, arerecessed as at 37 to allow the weights to completely encircle the shaf 29 when in their closed positions.
From the foregoing, it may be seen that when the driving gear 25 is rotated, the shaft 29 will be rotated thereby rotating the pin 34 and the weights 35 through theears 36. These weights 35 will tend to fiy outwardly, due to centrifugal force, and rotate on thepin 34. The cup 32 is provided with the annular bead or rib 33 which acts as a weights returning to their closed position when stationary. V r
A transverse pin 39 extendsthrough the weights 35 and protrudes a short distance from each side of the weights. are disposed rearwardly of the ears 36 and These pins forwardly of the center of gravity of each weight. A pair of extension coil springs 40 connect the protruding ends of the pins 39 so as to keep the weights 35 in their closed or inoperative positions with a considerable spring tension.
A second shaft 41, having its inner end slottedat 42, is mounted in the bore 33 in the shaft 29 so that the pin 34 extends through the slot. 42. By this construction the shaft'41 is at all times driven with the shaft 29 but is free to move longitudinally thereof.
A U shaped plate 43 is secured to the forward end of the shaft 41 with its arms extending rearwardly in position to co-act with a pair of bosses 44 formed on the forward ends of the weights 35. A hearing ball 45 is secured in a suitable recess in the forward end of the shaft 41 so that any thrust produced by this shaft 41 will be taken through this ball 45. a V
A housing 46 encloses the opening in the front end plate 23 and is secured thereto by means of the flange 47 and bolts 48. A shaft 49 is rotatably mounted in the upper part of this housing 46 and extended transversely therethrough, and a bell crank lever 50 is secured inside of this housing to the shaft 49 by means of the pin 51. One of the arms 52 of the bell crank 50 is adjacent to the ball bearing 45 and the other arm 53 is in position so that a compression the housing 46 and a link 58- connects this lever 60 with a crank 59 formed on the forward end of the operating rod 22.
The operation of the governor is as follows:
The gear 25 is rotated at crank shaft speed by the engine 10 and thereby rotates .the
shaft 29, the weights 35, together with the shaft 41, the plate 43, and theball 45. The pair of springs 40, being under a considerable tension even when the weights 35. are
in their inoperative positions, urge the weights together against the centrifugal force produced therein. When a certain rotating speed of theweights 35 has been reached, the centrifugal force induced in the weights will overcome the resistance of the springs 40 and the weights will move out? wardly thereby moving the plate 43 and shaft 41 forwardly. The ball 45 which is secured in the shaft 41 rotates the bell crank lever 50 and shaft 49 thereby rotating the rod 22 through the lever 60, the link 58, and the crank 59. v
One of the features of the applicants device is that the governor weights will be held in their closed position for all engine speeds up to a predetermined speed and will then fly outwardly to their extreme positions with a very small increase in speed to thereby operate the control valve by a very small weights were of the graduated opening type it would be impossible to secure maximum 7 power or full opening of the butterfly valve when the tractor was pulling hard in low gear. This desirable result is obtained by the position of the springs 40 relative to the driving pin 34.
As the governor weights 35 move to their outward positions, the springs 40 are extended which induces a greater spring tension in these springs but this is counteracted by a proportionately greater centrifugal force in the governor weights caused by them travelling at a greater speed due to their greater radius of rotation. The pins 39, being laced forwardly of the center of gravity 0? the weights 35, so control the extension of the springs 40 that the centrifugal force induced in these weights by the larger radius of rotation increases slightly faster than the counteracting force of the springs 40.
The effect of this construction is to allow 1 the engine to operate under full throttle up to a given speed'to thereby develop maximum power at all speeds up to the maximum speed allowed.
The regulation of this device is obtained by means of adjusting the screw 55 which varies the compression on the spring 54. When the adjusting screw 55 is screwed down, the spring 54 is compressed and a greater force must be exerted on the arm 51 by the ball 45 to operate the arm 49. This form of adjustment is very simple and may be operated from outside of the device in a very convenient manner.
Among the many advantages arising from the use of my improved device, it should be pointed out that I ha e secured an engine governor which may be conveniently installed on an engine and which will be fully protected and enclosed, thereby completely protecting the operating parts of the governor. A further advantage results in that the governor is adjustable by means of a simple screw adjustment placed on the outside of the device and in a vertical position so that it is easily accessible for a wrench.
A further advantage results because I have eliminated a number of delicate parts ordinarily provided in governors. The shaft 41, plate 43, and ball 45 being a unit, thus provides a very much simpler connection between the governor weights and the operating arm than has heretofore been provided. A further advantage results because there are no rotating bearings, sleeves, yokes, or other continuously sliding parts, as are customarily provided in governors. The point contact of the ball bearing 45 with the arm 51 is the only continuously operating part of the device, and due to the nature of this contact, a practically indefinitelife can be expected. The simple ribbed stop member which prevents binding of the governor weights in their extreme outward positions is another improvement over the existing governor construction.
Some changes may be made in the arrangement, construction and combination of the various parts of my improved device without departing from the spirit of my invention and it is my intention to cover by my claims such changes as may reasonably be included within the scope thereof.
I claim as my invention 1. In a governor, a driving shaft having an axial bore therein, a pin extended transversely through said driving shaft and said axial bore, a weight rotatably mounted on the said pin, a driven shaft reciprocally mounted in said bore having a plate secured thereto in position to co-act with the said Weight, and a transverse slot formed in the said driven shaft through which said pin extends thereby forming a positive rotary driving connection between said shafts.
2. In a governor, a driving shaft having an axial bore therein, a pin extended transversely through the said driving shaft and having a pair of weights pivotally mounted thereon, a pair of springs urging said weights toward each other, a shaft driven by and free to move longitudinally with respect to said pin, a plate secured to the said driven shaft in position to co-act with the said weights, a transversely mounted shaft hav-' ing a bell crank lever thereon, and an adjustable compression spring, one of the arms of said bell crank contacting with the said driven shaft and the other arm contacting with said compression spring so as to adjustably control the total spring pressure on the said weights.
3. In a governor, a shaft having an axial bore, a second shaft having a transverse slot therein adapted to reciprocate in said bore, a pin extended through said first described shaft and the bore therein and the slot in the second described shaft, a governor weight mounted on said pin, and means for operatively connecting said weight with the second described shaft whereby centrifugal force may cause the weight to actuate the second described shaft to move same telescopically relative to the first described shaft.
