Description

April 14, 1931. J. DAVID 1,800,606
GARMENT PROTECTOR Filed Aug. 27, 1927 Patented Apr. 14, 1931 UNITED STATES JOSEPH DAVID, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS GARMENT PROTECTOR Application filed August 27, 1927.
My invention relates to improvements in garment protectors, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a garment protector which will prevent the removal of garments from hangers by unauthorized persons.
A further object or" my invention is to provide a device of the type described which may be applied to hangers or racks of different types, and which is so arranged that it may receive and retain garments of various sizes or description.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which is simple in construction, durable and efiicient for the purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device as disposed in a cabinetpr the like, and showing garments applled thereto,
Figure 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a detailed transverse section of my device, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of my device.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of a closet or cabinet 1 in which the garments 2 are normally hung. It will be readily understood that the device may be used equally as well on a display rack or the like. In the present construction, I provide a supporting rod 3 having its ends fitted in suitable bearings or sockets 4. Arranged upon this rod 3 at spaced-apart points are hollow T members 5, the cross portions of which are slidably mounted upon the rod 3 but can be fixed in any desired position by means of set screws 6. Threaded into the downwardly extending stems of the T members 5 are nipples 7 which are Serial No. 215,916.
securely held in place by set screws 8. The nipples 7 are provided at a point adjacent their lower ends with oppositely disposed openings through which extend garment supporting bars 9.,
The bars 9 have their ends extended an equal distance upon each side of the nipples 7 and these ends are shaped to conform to toe general contour of the shoulders of the garments so as to properly support the garments thereupon.
The improved locking feature consist of two flexible members 10 and 11 which are illustrated in the drawings in the form of chains made up by a plurality of links and covered at 12 with a suitable covering, such as leather, cloth or the like. The flexible members 10 and 11 have their innermost links disposed in the nipples 7 and held in place by the centrol portion of the bar 9. The member 10 has attached to its outer end a hook-like member 13 formed with an eye 14, whereby the shackle of a lock 15 may be passed through the eye and the outermost link of the member 11 to fasten them together.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The garment may first be placed upon the ends of the bar 9, as shown in Figure 2. The members 10 and 11 are then passed downwardly through the sleeves of the garment until the hook 13 passes around the cuff, see Figure 2, and the lower end of the member 11 extends through the arm. The hook member and the member 11 may be secured together by the lock 15. Should it be desired to fasten a number of garments together, as shown in Figure 1, a rod 16 is used which has a relatively large eye portion 17 on one end thereof. The other end of the rod 16 is provided with a relatively small eye portion 18 which is adapted to be passed through the eye portions 1 1 and the lowermost links of the members 11 and receive a lock 19. The lock 19 is sufiiciently large to prevent the relatively small eye portion 18 from being Withdrawn through the eye members 14. In this manner, all the garwe are secured together by the use of only one] lock.
L It will be readily apparent from the tore- 7 going that while Ifhave shown the use of' 7 two members 10 and 11; the member 11 may 'be eliminated and the member 10. used as it g is or made longer so that the hock-l3 may be engaged'with'one of theuppermostliriks of this'membe'r after being'passedthrough P thefsleevef'of agarmentj This latter method of using the device'Will also redl'lcethe cost of; productionand can be used'jequally as 'well on difi'erenttypes of garments. V
While I have shown: and described the 7 preferred embodiment of my invention; it e V Wi11 be apparent that various changes and 3 alterations 'may be' carried putwhen putting L the invention into practice.without depart 2o ing frcm'the spirit ofgthe invention er the scope' o f the appendedclaims. g v
