IMPROVEMENT IN. CASTING CAR-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 80,048, dated July 18, 1876; application filed September 27, 1875.
ention is an improvement'in the class of car-wheels having a soft cast-iron hub and hardened rim. v
The invention consists in the construction of certain portions of the contact-surface of the hub and rim, as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
Figure 1 is a central cross-seotion'oi' the wheel; and Fig. 2, a cross-section of the hub on line 00 y, Fig. 1.
The wheel is cast in two separate and distinct pieces, A being one, and B the other.
The center, B, is cast first-,and is made of soft iron, so as to be easily bored. The exterior of this center piece is hexagonal, as shown in Fig. 2. the mold of tl1e main part of the wheel A in place of a core, which main part of the wheel can then be cast of the hardest iron attainable. 7 g
1 make the center piece 13 tapering on the outside from the cent-er each way toward the collars O O, as shown in Fig.1. This is so that as the partAcontracts the tighter it will hold the center B.
I claim as my invention- The improved car-wheel, formed of the hub or center piece B, having a hexagonal body,
tapered each way from the center, and the. hardened rim or body A, fitting said tapered portion of the hub, as shown and described.
