PATENT OFFICE,
WILLIAM W. LOBDELL, OF 'WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CASTING GROOVED PULLEVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,983, dated June 1'2, 1877; application filed April 21, 1877.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. LOBDELL, of Wilmington, Delaware, have invented an Improvement in the Manufacture of Grooved \Vheels or Pulleys, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a mode of manufacturing cast-iron wheels having rims with as more fully described hereafter.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a mold for casting a wheel of the kind referred to above, and Fig. 2 a part of a mold for casting chain or rope wheels with deep grooves.
A represents in section the wheel as it ap-- pears when cast in the mold, a being the grooved rim of the wheel, and B B two annular chills, so arranged in the mold that when the wheel is cast the chills will be adapted to the inner circumference of the rim on opposite sides of the wheel, as shown in the drawing.
The efl'cct of these chills on the molten consequently resist the frictionalaction more effectually than ordinary unchilled oast-iron.
The method, of employing opposite annular chills B B in casting wheels with deep grooves will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2 without explanation.
I claim as my invention- The chills B B, adapted to the inner circumference of the rim of a grooved pulley, for the purpose of chilling the groove on the outer circumference of the pulley, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM W. LOBDELL.
