ATTORNEY IIVVEIVTOI? JAMES W 5200K WITNESSES dined UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. BROOK, OF LYNOHBURG, VIRGINIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,347, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed April 3, 1889. Serial No. 305,814. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. BROOK, rc-
siding at Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
I My invention relates more particularly to metallic wheels formed of sections; and it has for its object to produce a wheel of this character which may be easily constructed, and which will be of great strength and durability.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction and peculiar combination of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully described in the annexed specification, and
particularly pointed out in the claims, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aside view, partly in section, of my improved wheel. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the sections detached. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a modification hereinafter referred to; and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4., Fig. 1. r
In the practical construction of my inn-- proved wheel I provide a Wooden core or hub A, provided with the usual spindle-aperture a, about which I form the metallic hub portion B,which is formed in sections 12, held 011 the wooden core A, in a manner presently de scribed. The wheel portion proper is formed of metal and in a series of sections of any desired number, four being employed in the wheel illustrated in the drawings. Each section B is cast with a hub portion b, a supplemental felly-section O, and two or more hollow spokes D D, connecting said hub portion and telly-section. If desired, the felly-section 0 may be made separate and secured to the spokes]) in the manner illustrated'in Fig. 3 of the drawings, in which it will be seen that pins or keepers d d are inserted transversely through the projecting ends of the spokes D and serve to hold the supplemental folly-sections in place. In casting the wheel-sections B of one piece, projections d d are formed on the upper face of the folly-section C and with projections d d on the inner face of the hub portions 1) about the spoke-apertures d d, as
most clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the object of which will presently appear.
- E denotes the wooden felly, which is also formed in sections; and F denotes the metal tire of the usual construction.
Each of the hub-sections B is provided with offsets or stepped portions 1 1 2 2, and each section is formed with its edges 3 properly beveled, so that when the several sections are placed in position about the core or hub A they will fit snugly against each other.
The manner of adjusting the several sec tions in position to produce the finished wheel is as follows: The several hub portions B are adjusted about the wooden core or hub A, and
metal bands G G are shrunk or otherwise se-f cured upon the stepped portions 1 1, and bands H H on the stepped portions 2 2 of the hub-sections l) b. This will cause the several sections B B to fit snugly together, and also cause the projections d d to bite into the wooden core, and thereby hold the same from turning within the metal hub.
As an additional means of securing the bands G G in place after they are placed over the hub-sections, I provide one of said sections with a projecting rib 5 and form the band with a recess 6. Then the band is adjusted on the stepped portion 1 1 of the hubsections B, the recessed portion 6 will pass over the rib 5, and by turning the band slightly laterally, the same cannot slip off in case it should become loose. The folly-sections E are arranged about the supplemental and wooden felly-sections and into the tire to hold the said tire in place.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the advantages of my improved wheel will readily appear.
It will be seen that a wheel constructed as described will be of great strength, and that the central core or hub A is not weakened by the insertion of spokes. It will also appear that the wooden felly sections E are not weakened by spoke-apertures, and that the same is protected on both the inner and outer faces by the supplemental felly sections and the tire, thereby rendering the same free from undue wear, and also preventing water or dirt entering at the meeting edges of the felly-sections from the inner face thereof and protecting the same from rotting.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the core A, of a metallic hub formed of sections encircling said core, said sections provided with inwardly-extending projections adapted to bite into said core, metal bands adapted to be shrunk over the outer ends of said core-sections, whereby said sections are secured in place upon the core, and spokes cast integral with said hub-sections, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. An improved metallic vehicle Wheel formed of sections, each section consisting of a hub portion B and spokes D, cast integral with said hub portion, and a metal telly-sec tion 0, secured upon the ends of the spokes, substantially as shown and described.
3. An improved metallic wheel formed of sections, each section comprising a hub portion B, a telly-section C, and spokes D, connecting said telly-section and hub portion, said telly-section, hub portion, and spokes tion 0 0, adapted to fit over said projections d, and means for securing said sections C to the spokes, substantially as shown and described. o
5. The combination, with a metallic wheel formed of sections, each section consisting of a hub portion B, spokes D, and a telly-section 0, cast integral with each other, said fellysections forming a continuous supplemental felly, of a wooden felly formed in sections, said sections adjusted on said supplemental felly, so as to break joints, and means for securing said wooden and metal telly-sections together, substantially as shown and described.
6. Thehereinbefore-described improvement. in vehicle-wheels, formed of sections comprising a central apertured core A, metallic sections B, each formed with a' hub portion B, hollow spokes D, hub-sections C C, and projections d (1 formed integral therewith, a wooden felly formed in sections arranged about said metal fellysections, so as to break joints, a tire, and means for holding said hubsections together, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
