PERFORATING MACHINE Filed July 18, 1925 V FIGJ.
FIG.2.
avweutoz Patented Apr. 14, 1931 UNITED STATES",
PATENT" OFFICE GUSTAV HERMANN AnoLr -r PERL, or BERLIN, GERMANY, AssIeNon TO THE TABULAT- IN'G MACHINE COMPANY, or ENDICOTTQNEWVYOBK, n CORPORATION or NEW JERSEY Application filed July 18, 1928, seriaino.
The invention relates to a card counting device for punching machines and has for its principal object to provide a new and improved device of this nature operated by mechanism independent of the punch selecting or operating mechanism to the end that no undue operating strains are imposed on.
1 this mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to provide a card counting device for a punching mechanism which is operated by the card carriage of the mechanism.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Fig. 1 shows an elevation partly insection of a key controlled tabulator card punch with the counting device applied thereto Fig. 2 is a plan'view of the punching mechanism, and 7 Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail views illustrating the operation of the counting device and showing the card carriage in different positions.
The punch may be of the type shown in the United States patent to Hollerith No. 1,110,261, for Perforating tabulator cards. A carriage 10 is slidable in theframe of the punch and provided with clips 11 by means of which a card may be firmly held on the carriage. In operation the carriage 10 is first moved to the extreme right in the fig.- ures and a card placed thereon and held by the clips. Thereafter through a handle 12 the carriage is moved to the extreme left bringing the first column of the card under a row of punches 13. The keys 14. may then be operated to select one of the punches 13 to punch in the first card column and incidentally effect operation of the selected punch and cause escapement of the card carriage to bring the next column of the card into punching position under the punches 13.

pressed against suitablestops so that when the arm is straight and moved counterclocki wise the counter will be operated to register one unit. The lower portion of the articulated arm 17, however, may be freely moved in a clockwise direction without affecting the settingof the counter. An arm 18 supported on the card carriage 10 moves the lower articulated portion of arm 17 as shown in Fig. 5 when the carriage is moved into its first punching position the parts finally as suming the positionshown in Fig. 3 when the card is in position to have-its first col: umn punched. When the keys 14 are oper ated to actually efiect punching in the first column the arm 17 is operated by the arm 18 as'shown in Fig. 4, to register one unit on the counter, thus effectively counting each card which is punched on the punching machine without requiring additional operating force on the keys 14 or interfering in any way' with the punching mechanism proper.
What I claim is:
In a punchingmachine having a counting device, a card carriage of the punchingmachine transversely movable in one direction for successive punching operations and oppositely for restoration to a normal starting position, an extension carried by the car-' riage, a counting lever connected to the counting device andv operated by the exten sion, and an arm articulated to. the lever freely movable in one directlon without operating the counting lever when the card carriage is restored to normal and movable in the other direction to operate the, counting lever when the carriage is 'moved during punching operations.
GUSTAV HERMANN ADOLPH PERL.
The escapement mechanism is indicated by,
the rack 15. This mechanism is well known and fully illustrated in the Hollerith patent referred to. r p
A counter 16 of the Veeder type is supported on the punch at its left hand end.
The operating arm 17 of this counter is V articulated and its lower portion is spring- In. testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature.
