Description

April 7, 1931. JAFFE IMPLEMENT RETRIEVER Filed Sept. 29, 1930 VE N ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 7, 1931 HERMAN JAFFE, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPLEMENT RETRIEVER Application filed September 29, 1930. Serial No. 485,034.
This invention relates to, pencil holders with special reference to types in which the pencil is attached by a flexible connection to a fixed support.
In the present invention it is an object to provide a support engageable with a rigid article, as for instance a telephone instrument, in a manner to support a casing containing a spring controlled drum around which is coiled a cord fastened to a pencil or other implement whereby it is held in an accessible position and prevented from becoming mislaid.
A further feature is in the provision of a support, casing and drum, constructed and combined in a novel manner, extremely simple and inexpensive to produce, and efficient in operation.
These objects are attained in the manner hereafter set forth and shown in the drawing forming part of this disclosure and in which:
Fig. 1, is a perspective view of a complete embodiment of the invention as in operative position.
Fig. .2, is a top plan view of the same as drawn to an enlarged scale, the cover being omitted.
Fig. 3, is a diametrical sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4, is a perspective view showing in detail one of the main elements used in con struction.
As shown in Fig. 1, the device is engaged with an upright support, shown in broken lines, by a spring clip 10 fashioned to partially surround the cylindrical upright, around which its outturned end edges 11 are sprung.
Centrally on the outer surface of the clip is secured an outstanding plate bracket 12 having downturned flange 13,-riveted, welded or otherwise rendered rigid with the clip.
A pair of lugs 14 are formed on the side edges of the bracket, beyond which is a portion reduced in width and turned upward at a right angle 15 containing a central longitudinal slot 16.
A cylindrical casing 17 has an integral flat bottom 18 in which, offset from its center,
are a pair of spaced slots 19 through which the lugs 14: are passed and at the center is another slot 20 to receive the slotted upright stem 15, after which the lugs 14 are turned inwardly to tightly hold the casing on the bracket.
Rotatable within the casing is a drum coinposed of a lower cylinder 21 having an outstanding fiange 22, normally resting on the casing bottom 18, and an upper cylinder 23, tight fitted within the outer cylinder 21 and having a corresponding flange 24:.
The upper cylinder has a fiat bottom plate 95 containing a central circular opening; 26 through which the stem 15 passes to act as a support on which the drum, as a unit, rotates. 7
Within the inner cylinder 24 is a coiled fiat spring 27, its outer convolution having at its end 28 an opening to receive a prong 29,
struck in from the wall of the cylinder 23 by which the spring is secured.
The inner end 30 is bent inwardly and anchored in the stem slot 16 through which it passes.
A line flexible cord 31 is passed through a perforation in the lower cylinder, below the plate 25, one end being formed into a knot 32, while the main portion of the cord is coiled about the drum, as best seen in Fig. 3.
The opposite end of the cord is passed outwardly through an eyelet 33 set in the outer side of the casing 17 and engaged with the tip 342 of a pencil 35.
A cover 36, preferably presenting a con VGX surface, is provided with a head 37 to engage over the edge 01"- the casing 17 and has an annular band 38 tosnugly fit its exterior; the stem 15 is preferably of such length as to contact the inner surface of the cover, preventing its collapse under pres sure.
In operation the pencil is grasped and moved into any desired position, as in writing, the cord 31, as it iswithdrawn, causing the drum to rotate against the action of the spring 27, whichuponrelease of the pencil instantly returns the same to the position 'ble 'on, it will be apparent that changes in sha e, proportions and minor details may be n a parting from the scope of the c aims i described the invention and set il the manner of: its construction l ise, what is claimed new and sought secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An llllplfinlfilll? retrievercomprising a spring clip to engage a support, a bracket c inbined therewith having an upright slotted stem, a spring actuated drum revoluble on said stein, a casing surrounding said.
- drum, means on said bracket to secure said casing thereto, a cover for said casing partially supported by said stem, and a flexible connection to a pencil normally coiled on said drum by action of the spring therein.
2. An in'iplenient retriever comprising a spring clip to engage a support, a bracket combined therewith having an upright slotted. stem, a drum revoluble on said stem, a coiled flat spring in said drum, one end of said spring being engaged. to the drum wall and the other end in the slot of said stem, a cord coiled around said drum and having one end attached thereto, a casing surrounding said drum and held on said bracket by means integral therewith, an eyelet set in the Wall of said casing through which said cord. passes, and means for attaching a pencil to the extended end of said cord.
3. An implement retriever comprising a support, casing, a bracket having a horizontai plate member and a vertical stem, means on said plate member to rigidly engage said casing, a cover for said casing, said Cttll'l having a slot, a drum revoluble on said stem, a coiled fiat spring having its inner end anchored in the stem slot and its outer end engaged within said drum, a cord coiled on said drum by action of said spring, said. cord extending outwardly of said casing, and adapted to have an implement attached to its extending end.
l. An implement retriever comprising a spring clip, a casing, a unitary bracket directly connecting therebetween, an upright slotted stein on said bracket, a spring actuated drum revoluble on said stem within the casing, said drum spring being fixed in the slot of said stem, an implement having a cap, and a flexible connection to said cap leading through said casing to be normally wound on said drum by action of its sprin 5. An implement retriever comprising a spring clip, a casing, a unitary bracket directly connecting therebetween, an uprightslotted stein on said bracket, a spring actuated drum revoluble on said stem within the casing, said drum having inner and outer body sect-ions each provided with flanges, a cover engaging over said casing and resting on said stem, a cord coiled on said drum tensioned by the spring therein and extending outwardly of said casing, and means to connect said cord with an implement.
Signed at New York, in the county and tate of New York, this th day of September, 1930.
