SHADE ROLLER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WESLEY F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residin at Bandana, in the county of Ballard, tate of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Shade, Roller; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othe'rs skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to shade rollers and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a cylindrical body portion formed fromspring sheet metal and having its edges overlapped, thereby forming a clamp for the reception of the edge of a shade, and eliminating the use of tacks.

A fu'rther object is to provide a cylindrical metallic body portion with plugs at its ends, said plugs being secured .to the body portion at points spaced from the overlapped edges thereof thereby securlng said plugs in such a manner that they will not interfere with the clamping action of the overlapped edges.

A further object is to provide the plugs with cutaway portions adjacent theends of the overlapped edges of the body portion of the roller, thereby allowing room for the flexing of the overlapped edges of the body portion at points adjacent the plugs.

With the above and other obj cats in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the, drawings, the numeral 1 designates a cylindrical body member formed from spring sheet metal, the edges 2 of which are overlapped as shown in Figposed in relation to the overlapped edges 5 substantially concentric with each other, a

The'upper end of the shade 4 is provided with a hem 5, which hem when disposed within the cylindrical body as shown in Figure 2 additionally prevents slipping of the shade asit is wound or unwound on the roller. Secured by means of screws 6 in the ends of the body member 1 are wooden plugs 7, the securing screws 6 being preferably diametrically disof the body member, thereby so positioning the screws that they will not interfere with the flexing of the body member when the upper marginal edge of the. shade is being disposed between the overlapped edges, and also allowing freedom of clamping action of the overlapped edges. One of the plugs 7 is provided with a conventional form of pintle 8 while the other plug is provided with rectangular shaped member 9 of a shaft 10, which shaft 10 is of a conventional form and has disposed thereon a conventional form of coiled spring 11, by means of which coiled spring the roller as a whole will be rotated during the shade winding operation. The spring 11 has oneof its ends anchored as at 12 to the shaft 10 and its other end anchored as at 13 to one of the plugs 7 It will be seen that the spring will be tensioned during a shade lowering operation and that during a shade raising operation, said spring will rotate the roller, for winding the shade thereon.

The plugs 7 have their sides which are adjacent overlapped edges 2, cutaway as at 14 thereby allowing room whereby the over lapped edges may flex during a clamping operation.

The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A shade roller comprising a cylindrical body portion formed from spring sheet metal, said cylindrical body portion being provided with registering overlapping edges shade clamped between the adjacent sides of said edges,,said shade beingofolded, longitudinally disposed stitching adjacent the folded edge of the shade the free edge of said shade beyond the stitching overlying the inner side of the inner edge of the body 5 portion and in conjunction with the stitching forming means for preventing displacement of the shade.
