IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,949, dated July 18, 1876; application filed March 21, 1876. v 4
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LGEORGE W. PARKER, of Gardner, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding-Chairs, of which the following is a specification:
Figurel is a side view of my improved chair arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same folded. Fig. 3 is a detail section of the same, taken through the line :0 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved chair which shall be so constructed that it may be easily folded into a compact form for storage or transportation, and which, when opened out for use, shall be strong and firm.
The invention will first bedescribedin connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claims.
A are the front posts, and B are the rear posts, which are extended upward to form the back. The front posts and the rear posts are connected together by rounds and slats, in the usual way. The front'post and the rear post upon each side are connected together by two bars or stretchers. O, which maycross each other, as shown in. Fig. 1, or may be parallel, as may be desired, and which may be straight or curved. D is the seat, which is hinged at its rear edge to the rear posts B, and its forward corners have mortises formed in them to receive tenons formed upon the upper ends of the front posts A. The lower parts of the hinges E, that hinge the seat D to the posts B, have an arm or shoulder, 0, formed upon them to receive the rear edge of the seat D, and support it, relieving the joints of the hinges from the strain. The lower ends of the posts A B have tenons formed upon them to enter mortises in the rockers F. The
rockers F are hinged to the lower ends of the front posts A by hinges G, as shown in Fig. 1. The lower ends of the rear posts B are connected with the rear part of the rockers F, and the upper ends of the front posts A are connected with the forward part of the seat D by spring-hooks H, or other convenient fastenings. I are the arms, the rear ends of which are pivoted to the rear posts B, and their forward ends are curved downward, and have tenons formed upon them to enter mortises formed in, or keepers attached to, the forward corners of the seat D, where they may be secured in place by bolts J, or other suitable fasteuings.
WVith this construction, in folding the chair the arms I and the seat D are turned up into the position shown in Fig. 2. The front posts A and the rockers F are then turned up forward into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the chair is folded. The chair is unfolded by reversing this operation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the pivoted or hinged stretchers 0, whether parallel or crossed, with the posts A B and the hinged seat D of a chair, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The rockers F, held to lower end of posts A by mortise, tenon, and hinge, as set forth.
3. The com bination of the pivoted or hinged arms I with the posts AB, the pivoted or hinged stretchcrs (l, and the hinged seat D of a chair, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with seat'D, hinged to posts B, of the arms 6, arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
