OARLOCK Application mea July 3, 1930.L serial No. 465,578.
This present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in oar locks.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision ofimproved oar locks which may be readily mounted in adjusted position yon a row boat or the like and operated from different seat-s with the operator facingy either end of the boat.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of oar locks of the character stated which may be inverted or reversed to advance the oars toward one end of the boat or position them near the longitudinal centre thereof for more effective operation of the4 operation of the oars when tilted in various inclined planes with the strain on the oars and the operating hand grip connected therewith evenly distributed kat all times lduring operation of the oars.v
' The invention has for a still further object the provision of oar locks of the character Y stated which may be eectively operated on various types of row boats and the like and may be readily applied thereto or removedl 35 without the necessity of employing special tools or skilled workmen. l l The invention has for a still further object the provision of oar locks of the character stated which are of extremely simple and 40 inexpensive construction as well as highly ecient in use and may be readily mounted on or removed from the boat, or inverted ask desired. y
- The invention has for a still further obj ect the provision of oar locks of the character to each oar on .'theoperatingstated which may be manufactured at small cost and retailed at a ypopular price with good proiit,thus providing a commercially attractive proposition.
To the accomplishment of these and related objects as shall become apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the'construction, combination and arrangementv of parts as shall beihereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and'pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
' The'invention will be best understood and can be more clearly described, when reference is had'to the drawings forming a part of this disclosure wherein like characters indi-y cate like parts throughout the several views. In the drawings Y Figure 1 is ka. plan of a conventional row boat with the present invention applied lthereto and showing the oars .mounted in their forwardly advanced position; i u
Figure 2 is a view similar to AFigure l, showing the oars inverted to position them nearer the centre of the boat;
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view, showing the normal mounting of the oars as illustrated in `Figure 1 and with the greater portion of theboat broken away for the sake of iclearness; Y l l 1 Figure l is a fragmentary detail section, showing clearly the mounting or supporting means for the oars and the operating hand grip therefor; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary elevation, partly so in section, showing a slight modification of the invention. n ,j
`Referring more in detail to the drawings,
it will be noted that each oar 6 has three eyes 7 projecting from the side thereof in 85 spaced relation, near the inner end of the oar 6. An operating memberV 8 is provided foreach oar 6 and also carries three correspondingly spaced eyes 9 projecting laterally from the side thereof. The operatingmem- .90
ber 8 has a portion shaped to form a hand grip 10. A pair of crossed connecting rods 11 are employed for connecting the ontermost eyes 7 and 9 of each oar 6 and its operating member 8, with the oar 6 and its operating member 8 normally in parallel spaced relation. The centre eyes 7 and 9 of the oar 6 and its operating member 8, respectively, are removably mounted on upstanding supporting studs 12 which are eX- tended upwardly in spaced relation through side strips 18 providedv at the upper edges of the sides 111 of a row boat 15 or the like and also through short additional bracing strips 16 placed on the upper edges of the strips 18 and having oppositely bevelled ends 17. Bearing washers 18 are secured on the projecting upper ends of the studs 12 to rest on the upper face of ,the bracing strips 16 through which the studs 12 are extended so that the central eyes 7 and 9 may rest on the bearing washers 18 and thus prevent wearing of the face of the bracing strip 16. Bearing washers 1S are also mounted on the lower ends of the studs 12 to bear against the underface of the strip 13 and lock nuts 2O are threaded in the lower extremities of the studs 12 and brought into binding engagement with the under faces of the washers 19. Y
In the modified forni, shown in Figure 5, the pair of supporting studs 12a are formed together and connected at their lowerfends by the transverse connecting arm 12?), thusl presenting a substantially U-shaped member which is embedded in a bracing strip 16a with the upper ends of the studs 12a projecting above the upper face of the bracing strip 16a. In this case, however, the bracing strip 16a is secured on the outer side face of the upper side strips 13 of the boat sides 14, by bolts 13a or other appropriate fastening means. The upper face of the bracing strip 16a is rounded or convexed transversely to prevent the oars 6 and the hand grip 10 therefor from catching on the bracing strip 16a.
As the construction of the device has thus been `described in detail, brief reference is now had to its use and modus operandi: It is to be understood that all of the eyes 7 may be extended from one side of the oar 6 and arranged in alivnment or the centre ring or oye 7 may be extended from the side opposite to the side from which the rings or eyes 7 having the rods 11 connected thereto are eX- jtended. The same 1s true of the rings or eyes 9 carried by the oar operating member 8. .As shown in Figures 1 and 3, the oars 6 may be positioned forwardly of the operating members 8 and thus advanced toward the forward end of the boat 15. When it is desired to position the oars 6 nearer the front of the boat 15, it is simply necessary to raise f them together with their operating members 8 from on the supporting studs 12 or 12a and invert them, thus positioning the oars 6 rearwardly of their operating members 8. This is possible, due to the fact that the centre rings or eyes 7 and 9 may be readily raised irom and replaced on the supporting studs 12 or 12a, as desired. It is also apparent that the oars 6 may be permitted to tilt, with their operating members 8 at any time, during operation ot' the oars 6. lt is also apparent that either oar may be changed to the other side of the boat as the oars are readily interchangeable as well as being reversible yor invertible with their respective operating members 8. In either position of the oars 6, each stroke oi the oars 6 is made with both a driving and a drawing force, owing to the crossing of the connecting rods 11 between each oar 6 and its operating member 8, thus thoroughly equalizing the strain and distributing the same over each oar 6 and its Operating member 8. By properly positioning the oars 6 and their operating members 8 on the stubs 12 or 12a, the hand grips 10 of the operating members 8 are brought into proper position for operation of the oars 6 either from the centre seat or the forward seatof the boat 15, as preferred.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that oar locks are provided that will :tuliill all the necessary requirements et' such a device, but as many changes could be made in the above description, and many apparently widely dierent embodiments of my invention may be constructed within the scope of the appendedclaims withont departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended vthat all matters contained in the said accompanying specification and drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in alimited sense.
VHaving thus described my invention, what i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Oar locks including spaced mounting members; oars having a series of eyes proliecting from the side thereof; operating members for said oars each having a ser-ies of eyes projecting from the side thereof and a hand grip; the central eyes of said oars and said operating members being adapted for removable engagement on said mounting members; and crossed connecting links between each oar and the operating member therefor connecting the outermost eyes of said oar and its operating member.
2. Oar locks including a pair of upstanding mounting studs for each side ofthe boat; a pair of oars with a series of spaced eyes projecting from one side of each oit' said oars; an voperating member for said oar having corresponding eyes extended from the side thereof; each ot said operating members having a hand grip; a pair of crossed connecting rods for connectingy the outermost eyes of e each oar with the outermost eyes of the op-
