IMPROVEMENT IN KEY-BOARDS FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,900, dated July 18, 1876; application filed May 9, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILANDER DEMING, ot' the city of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Key-Board for Type-Writers, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 rep resents a top view, and Fig. 2 a side view, of my improved key-board for type-writers.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to improve writing-machines where a stenotypic key is employed; and it consists in using a divisorbar with key-board, so as to admit the instant working of the key from any part of the board, the'said bar being weighted and pivoted or spring-carried, so as to rise and fall like a key, and arranged diagonally, midway, around, or otherwise with respect to the keys. It is also to be connected with stenotypic key, either permanently or bya swing-button.
In the drawing, A represents the keys of a type-writing machine, and B a divisor-bar, that is arranged in any suitable manner, either mid way between the keys or diagonal to the same, or in U shape around the same, or entirely outside of the keys, as found most convenient for the special disposition of the keys when arranged for stenotypic purposes. The divisorbar B is either pivoted and weighted or supported on spring-bearers B, or in other manner to be instantly carried up on the release of the pressure on the same; The divisor-bar B is connected by a pivot-button, O, or permanently, with the stenotypic key, and forms really a mechanical device enlarging the top of the key, so as to bring the same instantly within reach from any part of the key-board, and avoid any loss oftime, which is a thing of the utmost necessity in short-hand or stenotypic reporting by the type-writer.
The divisor-bar is independent of and entirely distinct from the common spacer-bar, and is not connected to the working mechanism of the type-writer. It has the practical advantage of making a divisor-mark in stemtypic writing without making a space or letter at the same time, if that is desired; and, as it is not connected with the machinery, it can be very completely fitted in all respects to suit the hand of the operator. It has also the advantage of being, if desired, permanent as an attachment, not requiringto be disconnected in order to permit the machine to be used as a type-writer for ordinary purposes. It in no way touches the action of the other parts of the type-writer, but remains, like a key, fixed and always ready for use..
The divisor-bar is depressedjointly with any one of the keys for making the initial letter of a word.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a type-writing machine, the combination, with the key-board, of adivisor-bar that is independent of the working mechanism of the machine, located as described, and connected with the stenotypic key, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
