-GEORGE M. BEERBOWER, OF WASHINGTON,'DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,314, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed April 13,1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BEERBOWER, of Washington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to typewriting machines, and more particularly to the improved construction and arrangement of the type and type-levers, whereby a great deal of time and labor are saved.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved means whereby the date, address, signature, 850., may each be impressed upon the paper by the movement of a single keylever, and also to provide means whereby such words, figures, 850., may be readily changed and new ones formed in their place.
With these objects in View my invention consists, essentially, of a type bar or lever carrying a series of removable interchangeable types, which form words, dates, &c.; and my invention consists, further, in certain details of construction and novel combination of parts whereby the various objects are attained, all of which will be more fully hereinafter described and designated in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which the same letters of reference indicate the same parts, Figure l is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the end of a machine with the supplemental frame attached thereto, and Fig. 4 is a side view of the same.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I employ a horizontal plate A, having an essentially-rectangular opening formed therein, and at each corner of the said opening are formed the upwardly and inwardly curved arms a, which arms are preferably made integral with the plate A. The plateA is adapted to be secured to the main frame of the type-writing machine, at one end of the same, to the longitudinally-proj ecting bars a, and is accordingly shaped for convenient attachment. Atype bar or lever plate B is pivoted between the forward arms a, and to the center of the same is connected the upper end of the pitman-rod b, the lower end of the said rod being pivoted to the rear end of the key- Serial No. 388,795. (No model.)
lever b, the key-lever being pivoted to the frameat b and carries the key or button b at its free or forward end. A spring b attachcd to the frame, presses upon the upper side of the rear end of the key-lever to hold and return the various parts to their normal positions. The free end of the type bar or lever is formed with agroove or recess 0, which is adapted to receive a series of removable interchangeable types or word-blocks, as may be desired.
In the drawings I have shown the date May 30th, 1892, which is composed of a series of blocks 0, inserted in the groove 0, said groove serving as a chase to receive the type. A type bar or lever plate D is pivoted between the rear arms a of the plate A, the upper end of the pitman-rod (I being pivotally connected to the rear end.of the bar, the lower end of the rod being connected to the key-lever d at d ,-the said key-lever being pivoted at its rearend to the framework of the machine and carrying the key or button 01 at its forward or free end. A spring (1 secured to the frame, presses upon the under side of the keylever d, holding and returning the parts to their normal positions.
The forward or free end of the type bar or plate D is formed with. a flange E, the rear face of said flange being undercut, as clearly shown, and a short distance to the rear of said flange is arranged a screw F, having a tapering head, said screw forming, in connection with the undercut flange, a dovetailed way adapted to receive a plate G, said plate having an autograph signature or other character in raised type upon the upper face of the plate. The plate carrying the bars provided with the date and signature is arranged at the right-hand end of the frame.
By the above arrangement of the devices the characters or wordswill be impressed upon the paper in the proper place without the inconvenience of adjusting the carriage.
In operation when the paper has'been placed in the machine the key 6 at the right of the machine is depressed, thus raising the pitman and type-bar, making the impression of the date upon the paper. The body of the letter is now written as usual, and after this the key d at the right of the machine is depressed,
ICO
printing the signature. By means of the construction herein described it will be seen that a great deal of time and labor can be saved, and also that the words, dates, 850., can be changed at will.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In a type-writing machine, the combination, with a type lever or bar formed with a flange at its free end, of a plate and a bindingscrew, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a type-writing machine, the combination, with a supplemental rectangular open frame adapted to be attached to the main frame of the machine, of a type-bar pivoted thereto and type or types arranged at the end of the said bar, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a type-writing machine, the combina tion, with a supplemental open frame attached to the end of the main frame of the machine,
having upwardly and inwardly curved arms integral with the frame, of the type bar or 1ever pivoted between the arms, the free end of said bar having a mortise, and type or types adapted to be inserted in the mortise, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with the supplemental open frame attached to the end of the main frame of the machine, provided with arms, of the type-bar pivoted between the arms and provided with a mortise at its free end, the pitman connected to the type-bar, the key-lever pivoted to the frame and connected with the pitman, and the removable type or types arranged in the mortise, substantiallyas shown and described.
GEORGE M. BEERBOWER.
