This invention relates to improvements in combined typewriting and calculating machines in which are included a traveling carriage, a set of numeral eys which is a common feature of both the writing mechanism and the calculating mechanism, and a un versal bar which is comprised in the calculating mechanism and is worked by means set in action by those keys whenever calculating is being done. The commercial Remington bookkeeping machine has these characteristics, and the invention is shown herein in a form in which it has been embodied in that machine, and which is its preferred form. The main object of the invention is to provide for putting all but a small portion of the calculating mechanism out of action in zones of carriage travel where numerals not included in the calculations are written. The invention also has minor objects which will be apparent.
The invention consists of certain combinations and arrangements of parts and certain features of construction, all of which will be set forth herein and particularly pointed out in the claims.

nism and the calculating mechanism, the universal bar which is comprised in the calculating mechanism and is worked by means set in action by the keys whenever calculating is being done, the differential shaft, the master wheel actuated by a segment mounted on said shaft, gears driven by the master wheel, numeral wheels or dials turned by the gears, carrying mechanism, locking de vices, and numerous other devices and combinations of devices, is shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States to John C. \Vahl, No. 1,270,471, dated June 25, 1918, from which patent all information required to enable the invention herein described and claimed fully to be understood may be obtained.
To the typewriter carriage 5, ports the platen 6 and which is drawn from right to left by a spring and controlled by an escapement, is attached the totalizer truck 7 on which the main totalizers are mounted and made to travel over the master wheel as the machine is operated. Each type bar 8 is connected to a key lever 9, and is swung to the platen with a depression of the front end of the key lever.
A rail, which is an element of the invention, and is combined with disconnecting mechanism, is attached to the truck 7 and consequently to the platen carriage, and is adjustable to different positions on the truck. This rail 10 may be adjustably mounted on the truck 7 in any suitable way. It is convenient to mount it on one or more dumm" totalizers. The one shown in the drawings being somewhat long is preferably affixed to two dummy totalizers 11 and 12, which are empty totalizer casings and which are supported on and locked to the truck 7 just as the main totalizers are, each dummy having a latch 13 which engages with the usual rack 14 on the truck. lVhen the dummies are unlatched they may be moved along the truck to desired positions and be there latched to it.
The arms 15 and 16, aiiixed at their lower ends to the rail 10, are aiiixed at their up- ,per ends to the dummies. The rail extends under and backward from the lower ends hich sup- 'ment of the key en s drops off of is one of the arms of the arms 15 and 16 and forms a flat ledge 17 which is almost as long as the rail, and at the ends of which has the downwardly inclined lips 18 and 19 formed on it. The arm of a lever, the fulcrum of which is the rock shaft 21 (Fig. 2) which is supported by the bracket 22 fastened on the left end of the actuator casing 23, this bracket having the ears 24 and 25 through which the shaft 21 passes from the arm 20 backward and in which it The other arm 26 of thislever is afiixed to the rear end of the shaft 21. This shaft and the bracket 22 pass throu h the facing 27 which is portion of the cover that extends over and in front of some of the mechanism, and that is shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,583,290, May 4, 1926, arm 20 being in front of and arm 26 behind the cover. The roller 28, which is mounted on arm 20 at its right end, is so located that when the lever is in its normal position the lower side of the roller is a lit-tle below the lever of ledge 17 on the rail 10 and that the roller may roll on this ledge when the rail acts on it as hereinafter described. The rod 29 is the universal bar of the calculating mechanism. It is held by arms 30 through which it passes and which are fast on rock shaft 31 which has fixed bearings. Arm 32 having the notch 33 is fast on shaft 34 which is the differential shaft and which turns when calculating is being done so that the upper end of arm 32 swings backward. Normally the shoulder 35 of the latch lever, which lever has the curved arms 36, 37, rests in notch 33 and then arm 32 cannot swing backward. This latch lever 36, 37 is mount ed on the pivot pin 38 supported by the bracket 39 which is fastened to the frame 40 by the screws 41, the latch lever being close to the right face of the bracket. The spring 42 connected to pins 43 and 44, fast in the latch lever and bracket 39 respectively, tends to. draw shoulder 35 of the lever downwarc The key levers 9 that are connected to numeral type bars are also connected by links 45 to devices 46, are mounted loosely on the stationary shaft 47; Each fan has a projecting portion '48 and when a numeralkey is depressed the fan is turned on shaft 47 so that the portion 48 moves forward and downward. Soon after the fan starts to turn this portion 48 acts on the universal bar 29 and swings it forward until said universal bar rides on the concentric edge of portion 48, which holds said universal bar in its forward portion during a part'of the downst-roke of the key, and just before the downward movethe universal bar the portion 48 and returns to normal position. As the universal bar is swung forward as described, it acts on arm 36 of the latch lever and forces shoulder 35 of that lever out of the notch 33 in arm 32, and thereafter, namely, during the time when the universal bar is riding on the concentric edge of portion 48, the differential shaft 34 is turned by means that includes the fan and other mechanism that is shown and described in the above mentioned Patent No. 1,270,471. The return movement of differential shaft 34 begins before that of the key ends and when arm 32 reaches its normal position shoulder 35 of the latoh'lever is re-seated in notch'33 by the action of spring 42.
The action of several devices which the calculating mechanism includes and the joint action of which is required to enable that mechanismto perform calculating op erations, depends on the abovefdescribed forward movement of the universal bar by means of which shaft 31 is turned and swinging movements fixed on that shaft. No. 1,270,471 fully explains the action of each of those devices and their joint action. Gne of them, for example, is the segment which turns the master wheel and the engagement of which with the master wheel is effected by mechanism which is actuated by force transmitted to it from the universal bar when it swings forward as described. Hence if the universal bar were not swung forward when a key is depressed, the segment would not be made to engage with the master wheel and a calculating tion would not be performed;
The disconnecting mechanism, which is combined with the above described rail 10, includes two levers, one being the above described lever having the arms 20, 26' and the other being the lever whichhas the arms 49 and 50 and which on the screw and pivot-pin 51 whereby the lever is attachec tothe bracket 39 at the left side of this bracket. The coiled spring 52, attached to the pin 53 fast on arm 50 and to the arm 54 fastened by screw 05 to the frame, tends to keep lever arms 49 and 50 in the positions in which they are shown in Fig. 2, which shows the lever in its normal position. The pin 53 passes through the slot in the bracket 39 and crosses the front of arm 37 of the latch lever. When the handle 57 is depressed to the limit of its downward movement, pin 53 moves backward and turns the latch lever so that it releases arm 32. The universal bar is swung upward by the action on it of edge 58 of arm 50 until it is out of the path of portion d8 of fan l6, and pawl 63 is swung away from the fan by the action on pin 60 of the lower edge of slot 59. If, then, a numeral key is actuated, the type bar will be swung to the platen but the master wheel, the carrying wheels, the dials and all other portions of the calculating mechanism which are actuated by force transmitted to them through the shaft 31, will remain at rest.
The knob 66 on the cover over the arm 19 of the hand lever is fast on the stem 67 which passes through the cover and on which, behind the cover, are the latch 68, nut 69, and spring 7 0, the latch having the edge 71 and being so mounted on the stem as to be angularly movable thereby. The spring is compressed between the latch 68 and nut 69 so that the latch and knob are spring pressed against thecover to produce friction whereby these parts will be held in the positions to which they are turned. lVhenever the handle of the hand lever is in its lowest position the lever may be locked there and the universal bar be kept clear of the fans 46 by means of the latch 68, which will prevent arm i9 of the lever from rising if the latch is set so that the edge 71 of the latch crosses the arm 49. The latch may be swung to the desired position by turning the knob 66.
On many forms or blanks on which accounts are kept and on which headings and other matter are printed, it is often desirable to write in a certain space on the paper numbers not included in the calculations. A rail 10 will be provided of a length which corresponds to the width of such space, and the dummies 11 and 12 will be so set on the truck 7 that the left edge of that space shall be near and onthe right of the printing point when lip 18 of the rail is close to and on the right of the roller 28. The rail is moved to the leftby the carriage in its stepby-step travel and as the rail is so moved from the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1, lip 18 pushes the roller upward and ledge 17 passes under said roller which is kept elevated by the ledge, until the right end of the rail passes from under the roller, which then descends to its normal position. Through the elevation of the roller and retention of it in the upper position, as described, arm 26 of the lever 20, 26, is made to depress and hold down arm 49 of the hand lever, and edge 58 on arm 50 of the hand lever is made to raise and hold up the universal bar 29, so that the writing of numbers on the paper while the roller is held up by the rail does not result in vibrations of said universal bar and in the operation of those parts of the calculating mechanism controlled by said bar. As the right end of the rail passes to the left of the roller, spring 52 restores the hand lever to its normal position and arm 49 of this lever, acting upward on arm 26 of lever 20, 26, restores the latter to its normal position. The universal bar is restored to its normal position when edge 58 of the hand lever is retracted, by means which is shown and described in said Patent N 0. 1,270,471. If it is desired to write numbers besides those calculated after the rail passes to the left of roller 28, the action of the hand lever on the universal bar may be prolonged by locking this lever with the latch 68, as described, before the rail leaves the roller, and the hand lever may be actuated and locked by the latch at any time when the rail is on either the right or left of the roller.
As the rail passes the roller during a movement of the carriage from left to right, the roller is forced upward by lip 19 of the rail and is held up by ledge 17 until the rail leaves the roller.
The length of any rail may be greater or less than that of the rail shown, and rails of different lengths may be used alternately or a plurality of rails may be mounted on one truck and used successively.
N ot only does this invention facilitate the writing of uncalculated numbers on the bookkeeping machines to which it is applied, by enabling them when that is done to be operated with but comparatively slight mental stress and physical effort, but it prevents much of the calculating mechanism from being subjected to useless wear when no calculating is being done.
In Fig. 1 there is shown a fragment of an active totalizer 72 having on it an ordinary subtract cam 78 adapted to act on the usual follower roller 74: to depress the lat ter and set the cross-footing mechanism for subtraction as described in Patent No. 1,270,- 471; and said cam and follower roller are also shown in Fig. 2. In order that there may be no interference between this mechanism and my disconnect mechanism, my roller 28 is mounted lower than roller 74., and rail 10, or ledge 17, acts on the under side of roller 28 instead of on the top of it.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement without departing from my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a combined typewriting and calculating machine which includes a platen-earriage and a totalizer-truck connected together, and in which a set of numeral keys is a common feature of both the writing mechanism and the calculating mechanism,
and the calculating mechanism of which in cludes a universal bar which is worked by means set in action by those keys whenever calculating is being done and which is movable on a pivotal axis, the combination of a rail attached to the totalizer-truclr, a railactuated lever on which the rail acts when it is in a predetermined section of its path of travel, and a bar-shifting lever havinga power arm on which the other lever acts and a load-arm which acts on the universal bar, hose levers being mounted on axes which lie in planes that are relatively perpendicular, one arm of each lever crossing an arm of the other, and the axis of the bar-shifting lever bein parallel to the pivotal axis of the universal bar.

In a combined typewriting and calculating machine which includes a platencarriage and a totaliZer-truck connected together, and in which a set of numeral keys is a common feature of both the writing mechanism and the calculating mechanism, and the calculatingmechanism of which includes a universal bar which is worked by means set in action by those keys whenever calculating is being done and which is movable on a pivotal axis, the combination of a rail attached to the tot-alizer-truclt, a railactuated lever on which the rail acts when it is in a predetermined section of its path of travel, a bar-shifting lever having a power arm on which the other lever acts and a load-arm which acts on the universal bar, and a retaining latch so constructed and ar ranged that by it the bar-shifting lever may be kept'from returning to its normal position until the latchis retracted, these levers being mounted on axes which lie in planes that are relatively perpendicular, one arm of each lever crossing an arm of the other, and the axis of the bar-shifting lever being parallel/to the pivotal axis of the universal bar. 7
