IMPROVEMENT IN CORN OR LAND MARKERS.

To all whom it may concern:

My improvement on my former patent, above referred to, consists, first, in pivoting the swinging marking frame to the front frame, and arranging it to work laterally in a slot, to allow the machine to turn readily at the end of the field for a new marking. It consists, secondly, in making the rear frame become again rigid or free from lateral 1110-. tion by means of the descent of the rear part of the front frame upon said rear frame, so as to clasp the latter frame in a recess sunk in the front frame.
In the drawings, which represent one of the forms in which I construct my marker, A A represent the main frame, (essentially the same in form as in my said patent,) having marking-wheels a a mounted between parallel bars I) b at either end; a platform, O, for the driver, and hooks 0 0, to which to attach the eyes or staples p of the cross-head n of the tongue G. E represents the rod of the gaging-wheel s, which is pivoted by a removable bolt or pin, k, in a clevis or hole in the rear of the platform (3, so as to be removed or extended on either side of the frame, and held out at a right angle to the course of the machine, by means of the rod t, which hooks into a staple or eye on the side of the main frame.
D D represent the frame of the rear-wheel' or marker, which makes the medial mark or line, and is composed of parallel or converging bars D D, united at a point and by a bolt, 6, beneath the front bar of the main frame, to allow said wheel to swerve in turning the machine, and be engaged with the rear of the frame A, when the machine is again on a straight course, by means of the notch or recess e c in the rear bar A. Below said recess 6 is a horizontal rod or bar,f, designed to prevent the frame A from tilting forward unduly, or allowing the frame D D to interfere with the side wheels a a. (See Fig. 3.) Said bar f, in fact, formsa slot to confine said frame I) D from too much swing.
What I claim as my improvement is- 1. The pivoted marking-frame D D, its recess e, and slot g, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The horizontal slot 9' in the rear of the frame A, for the retention of the swinging or pivoted trailing marking-frame D D, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement on my corn-marker, I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of March, A. D. 1876.
