ANDREV ROADS HUNSAKER, OF FULTON, KENTUCKY.
DRAFT-DETACHING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,628, dated April 3, 1888.
Application tiled January 3l, 1858. Serial No. 262,549. (No model.)
To all whom z may concern:
Be it known that l, ANDREW Bonus HUN- salrnma citizen of the United States, residing at Fulton,in the county of Fulton and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detaching Devices for Plows and Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in detaching devices for plows and vehicles; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed outin the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the front part of a plowbeam having the detaching device, which is a clevis, attached. Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a side view of the invention having a modification of the spring. Fig. 4 is a partial vertical section of the modification shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the front portion of a plow-beam, having the detaching-clevis B secured to its end. The said clevis consists of the platebar C, secured to the under surface of the plow-beam by the bolts c o', and the angular barD, con` nected to the outer end thereof a suitable distance in front ofthe end of the plow-beam by the hinge-joint d. The bolt cextends through and above the said beam and through an opening, e, in the rearwardly-extending arm E of the bar D, near the end of said arm.
fis an opening from front to rear in the bolt c above the arm E, and F is a split spring-key engaged in said opening tokeep the bar E locked on the bolt c, and having its legs eX- tending frontward and its loop rearward.
G is a cord having its front end secured to said loop and its rear end tied or otherwise loosely attached to some part of the plowframe-sueh as one of the handleswwithin easy reach of the driver. By means of this cord the driver can readily draw the key and allow the clcvis to open, thus releasing the draft bar or tree.
H is a coiled spring seated in a recess, 7i, in the upper side of the plow-beam around the shank of the bolt c', and bearing upward against the bar D to throw the same off the plow-beam when the key is drawn.
In Fig. 4 a leaf-spring secured to the upper surface of the plow-beam is shown as a substitute for the said coiled spring. The tapped ends of the bolts c o' are respectively engaged by the nuts c2 c3, seated in their proper recesses in the upper surface of the plow-beam, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and the tapped end of the bolt c passes through an opening, 0*, in the bar E, so that the latter can descend fully to the beam against the spring.
The device can be used with a single or doubletree by securing two of them transversely near the ends thereof.
The mode of operation of the invention is clearly evident from the foregoing description.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, with the beam, of the plate-bar, the bolts inserted through said bar and the beam, the anglebar hinged to platebar and iitting over the ends of the bolts, the detachable securing means for the angle-bar, and the spring for forcing the angle-bar away from the beam on the releaseof the securing means, as set forth.
2. The combination of the plate-bar, the angle-bar hinged to the front end thereof and provided with an opening in the end of its rearwardly-extending arm, the bolt connecting the plate-bar and the angle-bar and having a perforation in its extension above the angle-bar, a key engaging said perforation, the spring bearing upward against the rearwardlyextending arm of the angle-bar, and the cord extending from said key to a point within easy reach of the driver, substantiallyas specitied.
3. The combination, with 'the beam provided with the recess h., the bolt e', the perforated bolt c, the nuts on said bolts, and the coiled spring H, seated in the recess h, of the plate-bar O, the angle-bar D, provided with the openings d and ci and connected to the plate-bar by the hinge d, the split Spring F, and the cord G, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW ROADS HUNSAKER.
