' 0. SIMPSON.
. JOINTED PLOW TONGUE. No. 306,782. Patented Oct. 21, 1884.
WITNESSES:
a adwmwm PATENT F FICEO ORIN SIMPSON, OF KOKOMO, INDIANA.
JOINTED PLOW-TONGUE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,782, dated October 21, 1884.
Application filed February 5, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7 Be it known that I, ORIN SIMrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Jointed Plow- Tongue, of which the following is a specification.
My inventionrelates to improvements in jointed plow-tongues; and the objects of my invention are to construct and arrange a jointed tongue that can be cheaply and con invention applied to a plow.
the plow-beam by a bolt, 0
veniently applied to sulky or riding plows. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my Fig. 2 is a view looking down on a plow in the act of turning to the left, and Fig. 3 is a similar view turning to the right. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the important parts of my invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out the several views.
A piece of flat iron, a, madein a half-round shape, is firmly bolted to the front end of the plowbeam by bolts 66, as shown. The said iron to projects beyond one side of the beam, with a hole, a, in its outer part. On top of this iron is pivoted a similar iron, I), one side of which is bolted to the side of the tongue 0, as shown. A bar, 0, is also pivoted to the same pivot, c, and secured to the under side of the tongue 0 by a bolt, c,.as shown. By this connection the tongue and plow-beam are firmly pivoted together, and the tongue will turn to either side, as shown.
The foot-plate d is bolted to the side of the tongue just in front of the parts a b c, as shown. The said plate stands in a slight inclined position, with a downward-turned part, 11, in front and a similar part, w, on the outside, as shown. To the side piece is bolted a lover, a, by a bolt, 6', and the lower end is attached to the rod f, the other endof said rod being connected to one end of axle D, as shown.
At the rear end of the tongue, and near the axle I), the spring-catch z i is located. The said catch consists of a piece of iron, 2', (bent in the shape as shown,) bolted to the side'of a short lever, i, pivoted to the rear side of Said iron, with a spring, 2", pressing against the upper part of it, and a short pin, 8, projecting through the back of the plate and into the hole .9 in the end of the tongue, all as shown. Just back of said catch the beam A is hinged or pivoted in a suitable manner to the axle D by a sleeve or casting firmly bolted to the beam, as shown'in Fig. 1, so that the axle will turn or move,as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Thedouble-tree F rests on the rod g,.whieh is supported by the projection d, and secured at its rear end to the eye t in the under side of the plow-beam. When the plow is moving straight forward, everything stands as shown in Fig. 1, and when it is desired to turn (at the corner of the land) the driver presses the lever 73' forward, which draws the pin 8 out of the end of the tongue, allowing it to turn independent of the plow-beam, as shown in Figs."
2 and 3. On turning to the left the rod g pulls on one end of the axle, causing it to always stand parallel with the double-tree, and allowing the plow to turn more easily and quickly than by the use of a stiff tongue. When the plow is turned, the end of the tongue comes back into the catch-plate, and the pin enters the end of the tongue, as before, holding itin line with the plow-beam. The lever c is provided with a notched bar and catch, so that it may be set to throw the wheels farther around (to the left or right) in turning, or to keep them in line with the tongue when going straight forward.
Having thus described my invention, I claim the following and desire to secure the same by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of plate a, rim b, bar 0, and pivot 0 with the rod f, axle D, tongue 0, and plow-beam A, all for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the pivoted tongue 0, of the foot-plate d, having downward projections w and d, locking-lever 6, rod f, and. axle D. all for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the plow-beam A and tongue 0, of plates at b c d, pivot c, lever a, rod f, and axle, all for the purpose set forth.
ORIN SIMPSON.
