IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,770, dated July 11, 1876; application filed April 24, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM ORIou, of Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement'of two frames, hinged together and connected by a series of coiled-wire springs, which are peculiarly constructed, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings,-making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a portion of a plan view.

In the figures, A A represent two bars, which run longitudinally of the bed-bottom. Upon these bars are placed and secured a series of slats, B B, which carry the springs. D D represent the springs, which are spiral and conical in shape. The end of the wire at the small end of the spring passes through a slot in the slat B, and has a loop formed upon it, which extends below the slat and is secured by means of a pin, 6, which passes through it. The springs are formed in their largest or upper coil with a bend or enlargement, as seen atI I, and the end of the wire is bent and caught in this bend or enlargement, and is thus prevented from slipping out of place. 0

represents a rectangular frame, which is hinged at J to the lower frame. This hinge is placed at thefoot of the frame. The head of the frame 0 is supported upon the head slat, not only by a series of the springs D D, .but by an inverted spring, E, at each side. The springs D D are connected together by the metallic bands an, and to the sides of the frame 0 by means of the leather or suitable straps e 6. By connecting these springs together by the bands 0, a, and then connecting them to the frame 0 by the straps ee, they are securely held in place, and cannot be disarranged. I

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A bedbottom composed of longitudinal bars A A, and cross-slats B B, and the hinged frame 0, constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.

2. The springs D D, having bend or enlargement in their upper coil, and connected together, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of the two frames, with the springs, as constructed and arranged and connected, as and for the purpose specified.
