IMPROVEMENT IN SCISSORS AND SHEARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,730, dated July 11, 1876; application filed June 6, 1876.

- of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans,
Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Scissors, of which the following is a specification:
The drawing represents a top view of my improved scissors.
My invention relates to improved scissors for sewing-machines, which combine different tools that hitherto have been used separately, in one instrument of handy, cheap, and neat construction.
. lhe invention consists of a tool combining a scissors, wrench, needle-straightening device, throat plate mover, screw driver, and measure, by arranging at the end of one handle an extension, with a square recess and a central slot, to be used as a wrench and needle-straightener, at the other handle a projecting pin or stud for moving the throat-plate, and at the stock or stocks a scale and a tapering end, to be used as a screw-driver.
In the drawing, A represents a pair of scissors of any suitable size, as commonly used in connection with sewing machines.
One of the-handle parts of the scissors is cast or otherwise provided with an extension, 13, that has a square recess, a, for the purpose of serving as a wrench, the stocks of the scissors serving, in this case, as handles.
The recessc is further provided with a short and narrow slot, 1), equal in length to the thickness of a sewing-machine needle, which slot serves for the purpose of straightening bent needles.
The other scissors-handle has an extensionpin or stud, d, by which the throat -plate of the machine, whether of glass or metal, may he readily moved without the use of a separate tool or nail.
One or both stocks of the scissors may he graduated to form an inch or other measure, 6, which is very handy, as the scissors are at any moment available, and the end of the broader stock is made tapering, to form a screw-driver.
In this manner a number of tools is combined with the scissors, without changing to any extent the general shape or cost of the same, and by which an exceedingly convenient and useful combination-tool for sewingmachines is furnished.
Having thus described my invention. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of scissors, wrench, needle-straigh tener, throat-plate mover, measore, and screw-driver, in one tool, substantially as specified.
2. The scissors -handle, having a recessed and slotted extension for serving as wrench and needle-straightener, substantially as specified.
3. The scissors-handle, provided withapin or stud for moving the throat-plate, substantially as specified.
