Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL OHMER, OFDAYTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,721, dated July 11, 1876; application filed May 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I\IICHAEL OHMER, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair-Backs, and I do hereby declare the 'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention has for its object the pro duction of a chairback which will combine strength with comfort; and my improvement consists in applying to the ordinary back-brace an additional support for the back, which is connected thereto, as will be herewith set forth. To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I would thus proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents 'aperspective viewof my improved chair-back.
The ordinary back brace is commonly a strip of hickory bent, as represented, and secured in the seat in the usual manner. The back rungs or banisters are mortised into the seat and in the under side of the top of the brace. This forms the entire back, which, from the mode of connecting the tops of the rungs, is not onlyliable to break loose, but the thin top of the brace comingjust under the shoulders of the person occupying the chair forms a very uncolnfortable support for the back.
To remedy this, I take an ordinary backtop, A, and secure it to the top of the brace B by means of glue, screws, bolts, or pins, or in any convenient manner; and instead of se curing the rungs O in the brace, I mortise them in the bottom edge of the top piece A. By this means much of the strain is borne by the rungs and taken from the brace, which is all the stronger from not being mortised. At the same time the top piece A forms an easy and comfortable support for the back.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The coinbinationand arrangement, with a chair, of the brace B, top A, and rungs or banister 0, when connected substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
Witness my hand this 16th day of May, A.
MICHAEL OHMER. Witnesses:
