objects of the invention to provide a device of convenient construction capable of securing and holding a cutter blade in relation with a suitable guide, and such as to safeguard against accidental' contact with the operators hands. Another object is the provision of blade holding means facilitating ready change and placement of blades and permitting a satisfactory grip when in use. Another object is the provision of a construction allowing adjustment of the blade 'without opening the holding means or necessitating the removal of parts. Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of-the foregoing and related ends, the invention, then, consists of the features hereinafter fully described, and particularly-pointed out in the claims, the following description and the annexed drawing setting. forth in detail certain structure embodying the invention, such being illustrative of but a few of the various ways in which theprinciple of the invention may be employed. Referring more particularly to the draw 40 ing, there is shown a cutter blade 1 preferably" on the order of a safety razor blade, and adapted to be secured between holder members which are of a character to be readily separable for permitting insertion of the blade. ,As illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the I holder members 2, 3, are pivotally connected together at one end. Desirably, such pivot also includes means by which the i plement may be hung up when not in use, and or simplicity, we prefer to employ an eyelet-type of rivet 4: whereby the eyelet opening may afford the means for hanging up and at the same time provide the securing means connecting the members. At the end remote from the pivot connection, the holder members have diverging wings 5, these being angular so as to form a box-engaging guide, and the wings at the rear portion are flared or rounded out laterally as at 6, so as to provide a smoothly riding engagement against the corner of the box or carton being operated upon and prevent displacement, and misalinement of the blade.
The cutting blade, as indicated, is seated in the holder comprising the members 2, 3, such as to extend into the angle between the wings 5; and for the positioning of the blade projections 7 are provided on one of the members, as member 2, and (while such projections may be formed in any desired way, we prefer to form them as stamped up tongues whose free ends are directed toward each other. These projections are of a size and spacing to receive a blade 1 of safety razor type having an. opening or cut out 8,, and when so seated, the lugs or tongues 7 extend beyond the blade surface such as to enter openings 9 correspondingly provided in the other holder member 3. It will be understood that the holder members 2, 3, are of suitable gage sheet stock to allow of sufficient spring to carry member 3 with clearance laterally to'swing around and over the positioned cutter blade, the latter then lying between the members 2 and 3 in their alined relation, and the tongues 7 passing through the blade and into the cut outs 9 of themember 3. In this condition, the cutter blade is held and displacement is impossible until the member 3 be raised slightly sufiiciently to be clear and to be swung away from over or U-section form, both members 2 3, will be clamped together when the clasp is swung down thereover, while when swung back to its raised position, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the members are free and can be manipulated for blade placement.
In order to adjust or set the cutter blade'l for different depths of cut in accordance with varying thicknesses of cartons or the like, we further provide a cutter adjustment, this being formed of a blade carrier movable relatively to the angular guide wings 5 and lockable in desired position. One of the holder members, for instance 2, see Fig. 5, is provided with a longitudinal guide way or slot 11 for receiving the blade carrier, which preferably is in the form of a slide of bifurcate character, one arm 12 of the carrier being movable in the guide way 11. Upon the arm 12 blade positioning projections or lugs 7 are arranged such as to engage in the opening or cut out 8 of the blade, the blade seating against the member 2 analogously to the arrangement above described. In order to lock the bladecarrier slide in adjusted position, suitable locking means is arranged in conjunction, and by preference this includes interengaging means between the slide and the clasp 10. To this end, the other member 13 of the bifurcate slide is positioned externally of the clasp 10 the bifurcate slide thus embracing such clasp, and the slide has a pin or stamped up lug 14 directed inwardly from the arm 13, which engages in an arcuate slot 15 in the adjacent portion of the clasp.
By the provision of two or three or more such arcuate slots, a series is had allowing of'selective engagement of the pin 14 in corresponding position, and the, locking of the blade at such point. It will be observed that such bifurcate construction of the slide not only affords a carriage for the blade but also results in a compact and well protected arrangement between clasp and slide.
The manner of use of the device will be understood from the foregoing. For the in sertion of a blade, the holder members are separated, swinging on the pivot connection and the blade 1 is placed in position over the lugs 7 or 7 and the member 3 or 3 is swung back into alinement and over the blade. A cut out 16 in the member 3 allows of such movement of the projection 7 as may be in-' curredin the adjustment movement of the bladecarrier. With the clasp turned down into gripping position, the members are now firmly secured and the operator grasping the holder as a handle may draw the device along the edge of the carton or the like, the guide wings 5 seating thereover. The point of the cutter blade 1 thus enters and with a drawing movement cuts the paper or fiber board or the like along the corresponding line. To change the depth of cut, the arm 13 isslightly sprung away from the holder member so as to disengage the pin 14 from the corresponding arcuate slot 15, and in such disengaging position the slide may be moved back or forward to such other arcuate slot as desired, and the pin 14 will then be allowed to seat therein, the arm 13 having suflicient resilience therefor.
It will thus be seen that a device is had which is capable of usage under widely varying conditions of carton and box construc tion, and being of a compact form such as to be capable of being easily handled and with the utmost safety, since the cutter blade is guarded from all sides. On dulling the cutting edge at one point it is a simple matter to open the holder and turn the blade to present another corner and so in succession all four cutting points can be used up in the case of a double edged blade. By reason further of the slide mounting of the blade, quick adj ustment to any desired depth of cut may be had, without even necessitating the opening of the holder.
Other modes of applying the principle of the invention may be employed, change being made as regards the details described,
' provided the means stated in any of the following claims, or the equivalent of such, be employed.
We therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as our invention:-
1. A cutting implement of the character described, which comprises holder members pivotally connected together at one end, guide-wings at the other end, one wing being disposed angul'arly to the other, a cutting blade slidable longitudinally between said holder members to extend in regulable position between the guide-wings, and means for selectively positioning said cutting blade, said means including a series of selectively engageable stop and slot members.
2. A cutting implement of the character described, which comprises a holder having guide-wings at one end, one wing being disposed angularly to the other, a'guide-way longitudinal of said holder, a blade regulably movable along said guide-way in optional positions, and means for locking said blade, said means including a slide to receive the cutter blade, and a pin selectively engageable to arrest movement of said slide.
3. A cutting implement of the character described, which comprises holder members pivotally connected together at one end to swing apart therefrom in their own plane, guide-wings at the other end, one wing being disposed angularly to the other, and a cutting blade adapted to seat between said holder members and extend between the guide wings.
4. A cuttmg implement of the character carrier slidable in said holder, and means for locking said carrier in desired position.

A cutting implement of the character described, which comprises holder members pivotally connected at one end and having guide-wings at the other end, a longitudinal guide-way in one of said members, a slide movable therein and having projections adapted to receive a cutter blade, the other member having a runway to admit such projections, a clas pivoted to the said member having the gui e-way and adapted to clamp the holder members together, a pin on said slide, and arcuate slots in said clasp selectively engaged by said pin.
7. A cutting implement of the character described, which comprises holder members pivotally connected at one end and having guide-wings at the other end, a longitudinal guide-way in one of said members, a bifurcate slide having two arms movable therein, one such arm havin projections to receive a cutter blade, the ot er holder member having a runway to admit such projections, a clasp pivoted to the said member having the guide-way and adapted to clamp the members together, said clasp extending between the arms of the slide, and interengaging means between the clasp and slide for locking the slide in desired position.
8. A cutting implement of the character described, which comprises holder members pivotally connected to one end and having guide-wings at the other end, a longitudinal guide-way in one of said members, a bifurcate slide having two arms movable therein,
one such arm having projections to receive a cutter blade, the other member having a run-way to admit such projections, a clasp pivoted to the said member having the guideway and adapted to clamp the members together, said clasp extending between the arms of the slide, a series of arcuate slots in said clasp, and a pin on the slide selectively en aging therein.
