Description

NI'IED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
eUs'rA'vEs LENNARTSON AND LUEs G. BERGSTROM, OF ERIE, PA.; SAID BERGSTROM ASSIGNOR TO SAID LENNARTSON.
IMPROVEMENT lN MlTER-PLANING MACHINES.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 79.662, dated July II, 1876; application filed January 21, 1876. I
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GUSTAVES LENNART- SON and LUEs G. BERGsTEoM, of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MitenPlaning Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of our invention is to provide amachine for'planing miters, ends of boards or small blocks, &c., which, by their shape and place, are not easily planed by hand.
Our invention consists of a sustaining-frame, a vertical-acting plane, an actuating-treadle, an adjustable table, and adjustable guides.
Our device is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the adjustable table. Fig.3 is a plan view of the table, and Fig.4 is a view of the adjustable guides detached from the machine.
The construction and arrangement of parts of our machine are as follows:
H H H is the sustaining-frame, which has uprights H H, in which are grooves h. Operating between these uprights, and held in place by the guides 61 within the guidegrooves h, is the vertical-acting plane D. This is actuated by the treadle T, to which it is connected by a pitman, G, and a spring, F, throws .the plane up again.-
. is also sustained by brackets O O, which are cast solid with the uprights H H. The sustaining-face of these brackets is made circular, and a rounded bead, b, on the lower side of the. table fits therein. Thus the table is.
held firmly by the brackets when at any angle of elevation. The table is further sustained by an adjustable brace, E, which oper ates in a bracket or arm, I, and is then adjusted by a sustaining or clamp screw, V. This brace is in two parts, each ofwhich is provided with a screw-thread, (one a right and the other a left,) and the two are con'- nected by a nut, E. The object of this is as follows: The operator adjusts the table by the screw V to as near the proper position as he can conveniently. He then stands up to his work, and if a finer adjustment is needed, he accomplishes it by shortening or lengthening the brace E by the nut E, which he can do while standing up to his Work.
For guiding the work to the plane, no matter at what angle the table is adjusted to, we have the guides A. These are seen in Fig. 1, and also in Fig. 4. The front end of these is fastened in a T-shaped groove in the table, (marked U,) while the back end is held by a clamp, a, which also acts within a groove, or, more properly, a slot, J, in the guide. The groove U has right-angle branch U, as will be seen in Fig.
By this arrangement of grooves and slots the guides A can be set at almost every couceivable position on the table, and this fact, together with the adjust-ability of the table itself, renders it possible to face work on the plane D at almost, if notindeed at, any angle.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In combination with a vertical-acting plane, an adjustable table, B, provided with grooves U U, guides A A, having slots J. J, and clamps a co, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with vertical uprights H H, having brackets (J O, the table B, brace E, having adjusting-nut E, and clamp I, the whole constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as I our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAVES LEN NAItTSON LUES Gr. BERGSTROM. Witnesses: J NO. K. HALLOOK, E. R. BLOOD.
