Description

MARY A. .GOODWIN.
HOT-AIR REGISTER. I
Patented J'u1y11,1876.
i1 II v UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
MARY A. GOODWIN, OF PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK.
- IMPROVEMENT IN HOT-AIR REGISTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,653, dated July 11, 1876; application tiled.
' May 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that- I, MARY A. Gooowrn, of Port Chester, in the county of WVestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hot-Air Registers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to remove all obstruction to the passage of hot air from the heaterpipes through the register set vertically in the wall of the room, and at the same time provide a rest for the feet or any article requiring to be warmed, whereby the heated air may be more promptly and effectually utilized for warming purposes.
I accomplish this object by making the entire open or perforated part of the registerfront separate from the registerframe, but hinged thereto at the bottom, so that it may he dropped readily to a position at or nearly at a right angle to the frame, in which position the back of it may be used as a rest, as shown in Figure 2 of the accompanying drawing.
Fig. l is a front view with the rest elevated. Fig.2 is a side view, showing the rest down, and in dotted line the method of hinging. Fig. 3 is a front view of the frame with rest-front removed.
The frame F has around its inner edges a rabbet, R, intended to receive .the separate fronttherein flush, and neatly fitting. At the bottom, and for a short distance upon each side, this rabbet is cut through or slotted to receive the lower edge of the separate front S when turned down, and the ears E are attached to the front, so as to connect with corresponding ears on the frame, by means of screws or rivets, permitting free motion. The ears E project from the sides and back of the front S a short distance from the bottom, so as to allow the lower edge of S to swing in through the slot in the frame.
The result of this arrangement is, that the front side of S drops upon that part of the frame below the slot, and receives therefrom a solid support across its entire front.
The upper part of the front S is provided with a hook, H, which passes through an aperture in the upper part of the frame, and detains the front in the vertical position, when required, by engaging a corresponding partof the frame. o
The front S is readily released by lifting the same slightly, and drawing its top outward, when it may be dropped into position, so as to form a shelf or rest, as shown in Fig. 2.
The front S may be hinged at bottom. and detained at top in any other known way, permitting the raising and lowering of the front in the manner described.
I claim as my invention In combination with a side-wall registerframe, the reticulated front plate, hinged at the bottom, and adapted to be operated in the manner and for the purposes specified.
