' Stops-:84'fand' 86-aredisposed at. substantiallydiametrica'lly-oppositesides ot the per mutation mechanism upon the plate 10. A memberor pin 88 lcarried by one end of theI same .are rotatedthroughf'nearly an arc ot' 1800.v Thev stop; 84" is so'locatedfthat, when the/'pin 88 engages the same as shown at Fig. l, the vgroove'2347i becomes aligned with the dog 26; lVh'en thel .pinr 88 'engages the stop 86'-, the large groovebecomes aligned With the'rd'og 26;
Thefstop86'ismounted upon a spring 9() (Fig. 6)y whichV normally retains the same projected :through an opening; 92 in -the plate 10.A Cooperating .Withthe stop or detent 86 is'a'pinf94'disposedfon the plate 10 in' spaced relation to the detent`=86-f The pin 86 may be depressed tovpermit :ofl the reception of the pin 88-betvveen thepins 86' and 94 to hold the actuating member or spindle SO'again'st'move# ment'l whenV the tuniblers are being adjusted to change' the combination. In this lastposition the groove 34 becomes aligned with the yieldable member 68; A
The a'rroiv or other mark 96 (Fig. l) indicatesthe point' to which the numbers or calibrations 54 onthe tumblers, constituting the combination', mustl bey 'brought' in order to cause the several notches 50 to register or align with the' dog 26 to permit ot' the release of they actuating. member. I
In operation, When it is desired to release the' spindle 30,y the same being shown in locked condition at F ig?. 11, the several tumblers 38, 40 and 42 are moved in accord# ance Witha given combination to' bring the notches() into'alignment With the dog 26, the several notches 50 thereof thus register'-v ing With each other, and With the notches74 in the spacing-Washers 72, as shown at Figs;v 4 anfd 12.` Assuming for example' t'h'at'rther combination is 2-3-9 when the tumblers are moved iintil the members"2;3"-'9 thereon align with the pointer 96, as shown at Fig; 1, the notches 50 then bec'oinealigned with the dog A26. lVhen the spindle`30 is par-v tially' rotated in a clockwise direction (F 1) relative to the stop 84, the'p'art's' then as'- sumefthe position shoivnat' Fig. 13,1tl1e-nien'i-l ber 26 being forced into the notchesf() to lock the tumblers 38,' 40 and 42by the cam action oftherotatable spindle. This'move# ment causes thevv detent 2O to disengage the ba'se' ymember-16 tov permit of the separation of the partslOand 16; When the spindle'SO isrotated in coi'interclockivise direction` until the pin 88` engages the stop 84, tlie'fdetent 2O again engages the'base' member 16 and the groove` 34 aligns with' the dog 26'. One or more of the tumblers are then-rotated to bring their notches 50 outof alignment with the' dog 26, as'shown at Fig. 11', which forces the'dog by 'cam action ofthe notches 50`into thegroove 34, the dog 26 vbeing retained therein against' retraction and again" securely locking the spindle 30 against move'- ment.
In some instances it is desirablevtob'e able' to lock and unlock the device, or toeifect the engagement and disengagement of the detent 20 with andfrom the base member "lwithl out Workingv the combination. For this purpose, thei spindle 30,- is rotated clockwise,
looking at Fig. 13'until theepin 88 engages lthe stop 86.'V The relatively Wide groove '36 will then register with the dog 26, the latter being received therein, as shown at Fig.l 14, When the tumblersare'rotated out of'registering position. It'is'to be noted that the size-or Width of thegroove 36 is such'as .to permit'of the rotation ofthe spindle' relative tothe dogl 26to actuate the detent 2O With-V out first' requiringr manipulation of the tumblers to place the same in registering posin" sition iwith the dog 26. This permits of the. actuation of the member 30even though the iiotclies'fO ofthe yturnbleis dor'not register With thev dog 26. Y Y
lWhenit is desired to change the combina-,
` tion, .the detent86 is depressed and thepin 88 is engagedibetween the pins v86 and `9.4.
VVhen-the parts are in this position, as shown at Figs. 5 and l5, the small groove 34 registers With the-yieldable spacing member 68.
in this` position, the innerparts 44 ofthe tuinblers are locked against movement by fthe-dog 26, andthe outer parts 46, When rotated, cause the U-shapedy detents 60 and the yieldable members 68, Vnow inyalignment therewith, to be vmoved inwardly into the Ysmall groove 34. Itis to be noted,rlool{ing at', 15, that Awhenl the yieldable 4rmembei' 681s inovedinivardly `the spacing Washers 72 Will still berretained- Within the slots T8v tliereof. VVhen -theHdesired ,'niimberson the outer` partsf46of tliectumblers are brought i into alignmentrvvith the pointer or mark 96,
the. combination is changed'accordingly, and the spindle lthereafter Will be released as often Vas thesenumbers, constituting'the new combination, are `brought into Aalignment with the Vpointer 976. Y The boss 22 normally retains the detente projected when the sameV are out of alignment With the member 68.
y er-pa'rts thereof .The spacing :members 72 The ,noni-rotatable, spacing members '72 yserve/ to permit of independent movement of each tumblerasa Whole, or ofthe outer part thereof to. change the;combination, Without aecting the contiguous tumbler's,for the outaresupported in the slots78. of theinWardly yieldable member 68 independently7 of the tnmblers, so thatthe latter maybe readily rotated with a minimum, ofcfrictioiial resist-j ance and Without having imposed thereon the vabove the other toprovide va compact strnc-l Weight of the contiguous parts. f Nevertheless, thoftumblers 88, 40 Yand 42,v the Washers or spacing meinbei'sf-72, andthe linger piece'80 arerin close relation, andv are arranged one ture of minimum projection above the plate 10,v The tumblersaie al'so'in exposed'. position to. permit ofthe individual and independent'manipulation thereof as a Whole, or in part for changing/the combination'.
