Description

Dec. 14, 1954 5 A 2,696,727
mmpxcx LOCK Filed Kay 2, 1951 IN V EN TOR.
p l: I Y' United States The present invention relates to an anti-pick lock and It consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
uenerally there is provided a lock wherein is located a cylinder which is revoluble by means of a key which is capable of moving a plate tumbler having a laterally extending tooth at its outer end which tooth is adapted to engage in a notch in a lever. A square pin is mounted in parallel relation to the axis of the cylinder and is carried by a radially extending arm which is atlixed to the cylinder. There is also provided a lever having a gate n one end for the reception of the square pin and there s also provided a pivotally mounted holding lever which 18 normally spring-pressed toward the lever. "lhe construction is such that when the cylinder is turned the tooth of the plate tumbler is removed from the notch in the lever making it impossible to move the latter and to reel out the gate therein if the square pin does not enter the same.
it is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a lock or' the character set torth which is relatively simple in construction, easy to manufacture and yet efiective and elrlclent in use.
Another ODJCI of the invention is to provide an antipiCK lock.
uiher and further objects of the invention will become apparent trom a reading of the following specificatlon taken in con unction Wlul the drawing, in which:
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a sectional view or Figure 1, showing the device with a proper key therein and in unlocked positlon,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line 44 of Figure l with key removed showing the device in normal locked position,
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figures 3 and 4 but showing the device with a wrong key lnserted therein,
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken along line 66 of Figure l with key removed.
Figure 7 is a tragmentary vertical sectional view of a modincation oi the invention, and
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken along line 8-8 of Figure 7.
Ker'erring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a conventional lock plate 10 having a slot 11.
The mechanism comprising the present invention is best illustrated in Figure 4 and consists of a cylinder 12 having a key slot 13. The cylinder 12 is revolubly mounted in a block 25 attached by screws 28 to the rear of the plate 10. Dlametrically disposed in the cylinder 12 and extending slidably upwardly therefrom is a plate tumbler 14 whose upper end has integrally tormed therewith a horizontally extending tooth 1:. 'lhere is also provided a lever 10 having a horizontally extending gate 16a in its upper portion and an interlocking notch 11 in its lower portion. The lever 16 is pivotally mounted at its outer end upon a pin 26 mounted in the blOCK. 25.
Amxed to the cylinder 121s a radially extending arm 18 to the outer end or which is anixed a pin '19 which extends in a direction parallel to the axis or the cylinder 12 and which pin 19 1s prererably square in cross sectional area. A holding lever 20 is plvotally mounted upon a pin 21 carried by the block 2: ad acent the cylinder 12 and a spring 21. is attixed by a screw 27 to the block and bears against the outer side of the holding lever 20 and is adapted to urge the same toward the lever 16.
A longitudinal groove 30 is formed in the block 25 immediately below and a like groove 31 immediately above the cylinder 12. A secondary tumbler 32a of a ateht C ice length equal to the diameter of the cylinder 12 is slidably disposed in a diametrically extending slot 32 in the cylin der 12 in longitudinal registry with the tumbler 14. The tumbler 32a 18 likewise provided with a key slot.
It will be seen that the above-described mechanism may be repeated as many times as desired, three repetitions being shown in the instant case.
in operation, it will be apparent that when a proper key is inserted through the key slots in the elements 14 and 32a that firstly the secondary tumblers 32a will be lifted so that their upper and lower ends register with the adjacent peripheral edge of the cylinder 12 and out of either of the grooves 30 or 31. At the same time it will be noted that the tumblers 14 will be raised a proper height to allow the pin 19 to enter the gate 16a when the cylinder 12 is turned in a clockwise direction as viewed, for example, in Figures 3 to 5, inclusive. At this time, it will be noted that the holding lever 20 will act to maintain the lever 16 in such lifted position during the turning of the cylinder 12 as atoresaid. 1n the event that a ralse key be inserted through the various key slots, then in that event certain of the tumblers 14 will either be raised too great a distance or be allowed to drop to an improper distance with relation, for example, to the center or the cylinder 12. in such case, as is well illustrated in Figure 5, one or more of the levers 16 will have its gate 16a out of registry with the pin 19 and hence the pin 19 will be unable to enter the gate 16a of its associated lever 16, and, or course, it will be impossible to unlock the device. it will also be apparent that when the key is removed from the device it becomes impossible to feel out the gate 16a if the pin 19 is abutting against the free end or the lever 16 as shown in Figure 5. ln Figures 7 and 8 there is shown an identical construction with the exception that the key 36 shown therein is provided with teeth on both of its edges instead or upon one edge as is shown in Figure l. The operation or this torm or the invention is identical with that above described, the elements 14 and 32a still being lifted to particular heights by the positioning of such key in the slots.
while but two tortns of the invention have been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modincatlons may be made without departing rrom the spirit of the invention or the scope or the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device or the character described comprising a block, a cylinder revoluoly mounted in said block, said blOCK having a longitudinal groove immediately above and a like groove immediately oelow said cylinder, a hrst tumbler diametrically disposed and vertically slidable in said cylinder and extending upwardly therefrom, a laterally extending tooth ahixed to the upper end of said first tumbler, a lever pivoted at one or its ends to said block and having an inwardly extending gate formed in the upper portion of its other end and a notch for receiving said tooth in the lower portion of said other end, a secondary tumbler of a length equal to the diameter of said cylinder diametrically slidaole in said cylinder in longitudinal reglstry with said first tumbler, said tumblers each provided with a key slot, a longitudinally extending pin carried fixedly by said cylinder in spaced relation thereto and receivable in said gate when said lever is raised to proper height, and yieldable means for maintaining said lever in raised position.
2. A device as defined in claim 1 wherein there is provided multiples of the lever and tumblers.
3. A device as defined in claim 1 wherein said means comprises an arm pivoted to said block and having its free end disposed to abut the free end of said lever, and a spring atlixed to said block and bearing against said arm to urge the same into such abutting relationship with said lever.
