Figure 9 is an isometric view illustrating the plug, actuating spring and bolt in a disassembled arrangement.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 10 indicates the case of my improved lock that, as to its general construction, may be of an. ordinary type, having openings for the branches of a shackle, for a key plug, and for tumblers acting in connection with said plug. The shackle has an arm 1l pivotally secured within the `case near one edge thereof and seated upon a spring 12, While the other, short arm 13 of the shackle is formed to engage within a recess 14 projecting inwardly from the end of the case near one edge thereof. All the parts thus far described may be of old and Well known construction and, except for features to be hereinafter mentioned, form no part of the present invention.
A key plug 15 is rotatably secured within the case in any ordinary manner, this plug having the usual slot for the reception of a key and it is provided with pin tumbler members to act-in connection with similar members in the case to permit rotation of the plug' when the pin tumblers are properly positioned by a key in a manner that will be readily understood.
In locks of this type it has often been found possible, by means of blows properly delivered well esfothr'sfmaybe inf the accompanying afginst ne ,l
ders a opposite sides of the notch. Said bolt has a lockinglip 22 that is adapted to engage within a notch 23 in the side of the short arm 13 of the shackle near its end. A cam 2 4 is formed on said-flip for engagement by a cam 25 on the end of the short arm ofthe shackle. A spring 26 is placed inthe recess 1 1'1, one end of the spring being inserted in a' hole'in the bottom of said recess and' the other end being inserted into a hole 27 inthe'bolt 20 for the purpose of holding the bolt normally .inits locked position.
In theoperation of the parts the bolt is held by the spring so that the locking lip 22 is normally engagedin the notch 23 in the end of the short arm 13 of the shackle. A key having been inserted in the plug and the tumblers properly positioned to permit rotation of the plug, such rotation will carry the actuating lug 19 against a shoulder at the end of the notch 21, thereby rotating the locking bolt to disengage the lip 22 from the notch 23 in the shackle arm, thus permitting the shackle to be disengaged from its opening in the caseunder the. iniluence of the spring 12.
In orderto remove the key from the plug it will now be necessary to reverse the rotation of the plug to its normal position, wherein the lip 22 will be projected into thepath of movement of the short arm 13 of the shackle when it shall be again projected into its opening, as in'locking of parts. In this locking movement the cam 25 on the end of the shackle engages thecam 24 on the locking bolt rotating the latter against the tension of the spring 26 and permitting the shackle to be placed in locking position.y Just as soon as this position-is reached the spring 26v will rotate the boltto engage the lip 22 with the notch 23 in the shackle arm, thereby holding the latter in its locked position.
As an aid to operation of the key plug 15, I employ a spring 28 surrounding the plug, one end of the spring being engaged in an opening in the lip of the plug, and the other end of the spring being engaged in an opening in the case 10. The; action yofythe-spring -is to return the plug to,iitsfnormalpositionlwhem'it hasv been turned from that position in the use of a key to unlock the shackle, the key plug being thus!l always in position to permit removal from insertion of `a key, into the plug.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have'described the principles of operation of my invention;4 together with the 1 device which I now considerlto represent the `best embodiment thereof but I desire to haveit understood that the device shown is gonlyillus-y trative and that the invention may be carried 'out I by yother frhea'ns' Vland* applied 4'to' 'uses other fthanthos .,abovelsfeti" f lrA padlock lllillllllllllg ase, 1a, :shackle .'mour'itfedinfth'e` case and' having "a l locking notch,
