IMPROVEMENT IN STEP-LADDER CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. I 79,520, dated July 4, 1876; application filed May 27, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAVERIO OARBONE, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a novel construction of chairs designed for library, hall, and other uses, where it is desirable to have close at der, and series of drawers arranged together in a single piece of furniture, in the manner and for the purposes hereinafter more fully set forth.

To enable those skilled to more fully understand my invention, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same, referring by letters to the accompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section of a. chair embody ing the features of my invention, and Fig. 2 a side elevation with the top or back turned over in position to form a con tin uous flight of steps.

Similar letters indicate like parts in both figures.

A represents the frame proper, and B the seat, which is hinged at its forward end, as

seen at a, to the front portion of the frame, and designed to swing over on said hinges, opening diagonally and formed into a series of steps, 0, which, when the chair is in the position seen at Fig. 2, forms a continuous flight double the height of the chair. The spaces under the treads of the steps in the stationary half or front portion of the chair are provided with or filled by a series of drawers, D, on one or both sides. E is asliding step or platform, adapted to be drawn out in front to assist a small person in ascending to the seat of the chair, and it may be slid in out of the way, as is clearly indicated in the drawing. The front half of the chair is provided at the rear side with a pair of short or auxiliary legs, A, and they, as wellas the remainder, are provided with suitable rollers or casters I), and top of the back with. metallic studs or projections d, which, when the back is turned over, as seen at Fig. 2, rest against the floor, and prevent the slipping of the chair upon the floor or carpet.- e are hooks on the lowest projection of the rear half of the chair, and f staples or eyes upon the legs A, by which the two portions or sections of the chair are secured or held in the position shown at Fig. 1.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combined chair, step-ladder, and series of drawers in a single piece of furniture, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore .set forth.
