DISPLAY CASE Filed March 15, 1928 2 She ets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR Patented Mar. 3, 1931 PATENT OFFICE GLEN G. GRISWOLD, OF MADISON, OHIO DISPLAY CASE I Application filed March 15, 1928. Serial No. 261,888.
The present invention relates broadly to the art of display cases, and more particularlyto a portable case especially adapted for the reception and display of articles such, for example, as honey and othersweets which are rendered less attractive and appetizing by the display thereof inthe open air. 7
It is customary in the-trade for confectioners, storekeepers and the like, handling commodities of the general character herein contemplated, to display the same both in the comb'and in jars, glasses or the like.
i The presentinvention has for one of its objects the provisionof a display case adapted to'be compactly folded to facilitate shipping, and constructed to provide a readily cleaned, tight enclosure for the reception of certain commodities, and a display rack for the reception of other commodities of the 29 same general type which are not deleteriously affected by free exposure to the air.
Certain related features are described and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 407,875, filed Nov. 18,1929. I
In the accompanying drawings is shown for purposes of illustration only, a preferred form of my invention, it being understood that the drawings do not define the limits of my invention inasmuch as changes ,in the general contour, appearance and arrangement of the parts and the'materials of which they I areconstructed may be made without departing either from the spirit ofthe invention or the scope of my broaderclaims.
In the drawings t Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of a display case constructed in accordance with the present invention; V
I Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the case with the parts in the position illustrated in Figure 1.; v
V Figure 3 is a perspective view of the display case of Figures 1 and 2 with the folding display rack in the position it occupies during shipping; 1 t p t Figure 4 is a detail perspective view illustrating a portion of the door" structure; and
Figure 5 is a detail section in a horizontal plane throughone corner of the case.
In carrying out the present invention there may be provided a display case of any desired size and having any desired capacity, the parconstruction similar to that of the base and formed with grooves 6 for the reception of the end pieces, whereby a rigid frame is provided.
Formed in the top is a longitudinally extending slot 7 having a width substantially equal to the thickness of a piece of glass 8, which it is desired to utilize as the front of the case. 'The slot 7 extends in alignment with grooves 9 on the inner faces of the end pieces, and these grooves in turn align with a similar groove 10 in the upper face of the base. reason of this construction it will be apparent that the piece of glass 8 may be readily dropped into position and firmly held against accidental movement while in this position, the sides of the grooves and slot cooperatingwith the glass to provide a substantially complete closure for the'front of the case.
At oneor more desired intermediate points ln'the case, dependmg upon the number of shelves which it isvdesired to provide therein.
the end pieces may be formed with transof honey. 7 l a Carried by the base is a door 13, which is normally urged into closed position by spring hinges 14. In order to form a tight closure 'for the door, the rear edge of the top and end pieces are formed with rabbets 15 which are preferably provided with a seating and cushioning material 16, adapted to'engage the edges of the door during the closing movement and cushion its impact under the force 7 of the spring hinges and at the same time engage it tightly enough to prevent the ingress of dust and other foreign material. The low- 7 er edge of the dooris sealed by providing a stop strip 17 on the base. u I W For holding the door 13 in open position to facilitate access to and removal of c'ontents from thecase, it is provided with a combine'd guide and stop strip 18, the slot 19 of which is.
enlarged at its inner end'to providea rebess 20 into which the screw 21 may drop to prevent the door from swinging shut.

The
vlength of the receptacle is substantially equal to, but slightly less than, the internal length of the display case, whereby the receptacle may be maintained within the case during shipment.
