The present invention relates to strainers for milk, etc. An object of the invention is to provide a strainer element supporting seat which will maintain a flat condition during rough usage while, at the same time, may be maintained in a sanitary condition. An-

other object of the invention is to provide a strainer element in which the filtering material is protected against the vertical fall of the liquid thereon.

To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed.

In the illustrated embodiment of the in vention, 1 indicates a funnel which has a reduced cylindrical discharge portion 2. The latter has formed in one piece therewith, an inturned annular flange 3 about the discharge opening forming a flat seat for the strainer element.

With the end in view of maintaining the strainer element supporting flange in a flat condition under rough usage and at the same time to provide a sanitary construction which will be free from cracks or crevices in the path of the flow of the liquid to be strained, a reinforcing ring is provided which is angular in cross section having a vertical portion l which surrounds the lower part of the reduced discharge and a horizontal portion 5 which underlies the flange 3. The free edge of the flange 3 is provided with a flange 6 which is extended through the opening of the portion 5 and bent on the under side of the latter. A filter ing material of any suitable form 8' rests on the supporting plate 7 and above this material is a protector for the material; In this instance, this protector is in the form of a concave-convex plate ordisk 9 which is multi-slitted, the metal on one side of each slit being pressed upwardly at 10 to provide openings 11 between the walls ofthe slit. These openings are at right angles to the plane of the material so that liquid falling ver-d tically cannot pass directly through the openings 10 but must first strike the plate and then flow horizontally through the openings onto the filtering material. In this way, the liquid is prevented from injuring the filtering material and at the same time the collectionof dirt or extraneous matter in piles or pockets is prevented. The strainer element may be held to its seat in any suitable manner as by a split expanding ring 12 which frictionally engages the interior wall of the funnel above the strainer element.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a strainer has been provided in'which the seat for the strainer element has been reinforced in such a manner that it will be maintained in a fiat condition under roughusage while at the same time no cracks or crevices are present in the path of the'flow of the material through the discharge. What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A strainer element embodying a flatly supported filtering material and a disk ar'- H ranged above the filteringinaterial and having a marginal, horizontal, non-perforate portion engaging the filtering material at the edges of the latter, and a shallow central concavo convex portion provided with slits therein, one sideof each slit being pressed upwardly. 1

2. In a strainer element, the combination with a flat support, and a filtering material lying in a flat condition on the support, of a cover for the filtering material comprising a central shallow concavo convex portion projected above the filtering materialyand an annular flat non-perforate-portion" projecting beyond the concavo convex portion and engaglng the edges of the filtering material, the concavo convex portion being provided with slits and being pressed upwardly at one side, of each slit above the convex wall.
