JONAH It. COLE, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANS FOR PAINTS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,400, datcd December 9, 1673; application filed July 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ONAH R. Cons, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tin Cans with Sealing-Covers, which are simple in construction, convenient in use, and durable.
This invention has for its object to reduce the cost of manufacture of sealing-cans, to use less material, and to make them more convenient in use; and it consists in forming a flange on the top of the can, having a double thickness of the material, and in using a cover of peculiar construction, as hereinafter more fully described and pointed out by the claim; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accon'ipanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical central section of the same; and Figs. '3, 4, and 5 show the process of bend ing the top of the can.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the body of the can with the top bent inward and then outward, thus forming the annular flange O, which is of double thickness of metal, upon which rests the cover 13. This cover is constructed with an upwardprojecting flange, a, allowing the cover to set down into the flange C, while the cover is supported upon the flange O by the projection or flange a. The space represented by dotted lines 0 c, Fig. 2, is then filled with solder, and the can is rendered airtight. By this means the flange 0 is made sufficient] y strong, so that it is not necessary to spin a wire in around the top for strength and support; nor is it necessary to use a double band around the top; and the cover may easily be removed and replaced without injury to the can.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The can A having a flange, 0,015 double thickness of material, and used in connec tion with the cover B having the raised portion or flange a and forming a solder-space, 0, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I hereunto .set my hand this 16th day of July, 1873.
JONAH It. COLE.
In presence of- DANIEL M. VAN Corr, J. LANDGREN.
