One object of the invention is to provide an improved collapsible cardboard display device having features of construction to re duce the cost of the device and render the same rugged, reliable and eflicient in operation.

Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved shadow box with reference to the light supporting means as an element of a collapsible cardboard box structure.

Otherobjects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the specification proceeds.

With the aforesaid objects in View, the invention consists in the novel combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described in their preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subj oined claims, and illustrated on the annexed drawing, wherein like parts are designated by the same reference characters throughout the several Views.

The advantages of the invention as here outlined are best realized when all of its features and instrumentalities are combined in one andthe same structure, but, useful devices maybe produced embodying less than the whole.

Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 denotes a device embodying the invention. The same includes a box structure made preferably of cardboard and including a front ele- The front element includes a plane front wall 13 having a relatively large opening 14 of'any suitable design, the opening being spaced from the edges of said wall. The upper portion of the front wall may have indicia forming openings 15 cut therein, and preferably backed by a translucent sheet of material 16 secured or glued to the rear side of said front wall. At the bottom of the display opening 14 may be provided a flap 1? integral with the front wall and adapted to extend rearward. This flap 1'? may constitute a bottom wall, and may include a supporting tongue 18 coacting as her inafter described. f l

The rear element 12 may include rear wall 19, and relatively vertical side walls 20 integral therewith. The latter may be formed with marginal flanges 21 secured to the front wall 13 by small nails or adhesive as may be desired. Extending centrally, longitudinally of the side walls are score lines 22' whereby the side walls may be collapsed. At the bottom portion of the rear wall is a slit 23 and a downward projecting locking tongue 24 resiliently acting to close said slit, so that, on inserting the supporting tongue 18 into the slit, the locking tongue bears thereon to detaohably and yet reliably engage the former in the sli At the upper part of the rear wall 19 is a flap 25 preferably integral with the same, although it may also be separate and'engaged therewith. As the slits 28 are on opposite sides of the crease lines, a re-enforcement is obtained for the side walls 20 to prevent collapse thereof. An opening 29a in each side yvall may coact with the corresponding flap- Any suitable source of light 30 may be disposed in' the upper part of the box structure. For example, the top wall 25 may have an opening 31 in which the socket 82 of the lamp is detachably fitted and supported,-with the lamp in relative proximity to the indicia 15 to illuminate the same.

If an article supporting means 33 is to be utilized, the same is preferably disposed with in the .boxand so as to support the article therein to be partially illuminated by light from the lamp 80. The said supporting meanssmayibe made of cardboard and collapsible,-and it may be detachably secured in position by downward extending tongues 34: received in openings .or slots 35 in the bottom wall oftthewboxstructure. The means 33 .may be made ofone or more pieces, and collapse thereof may be provided by fold lines 36. The box structure may be conveniently made of two blanks '37, 38 corresponding to said rear-and front elements, so that the device may be inexpensively produced.

iInsetting up. the device, the side walls 20 arestraightened out and the top and bottom -wal-ls or flaps engaged as shown in Fig. 4. 'Thenethe lamp and the article-supporting means are mounted. To collapse the device, the latter are removed, then the top and bottom walls 25 and. 17 are swung upward into planes parallel to the front and rear walls as in Fig. 8, whereupon the side walls 20 are collapsible, so that the device may be brought intoperfectly fiat position. Similarly the supporting means '33 may be made flat so that theentire device can: be compactly and conveniently stored and shipped.

It will be appreciated that various changes and modifications may be made in the device as shown in the drawing, and that the same is submitted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense, the scope of thevinvention being defined in the following claims.

A device as set forth in claim 8, including a folded collapsible table means located within said walls, said table means having downward extending tongues, said bottom flap having slots to receive said tongues, whereby the table means is detachably engaged.

6. A collapsible cardboard display device including a plane front wall having a relatively large opening spaced from the side edges thereof and an integral flap at the bottom of said opening, said flap being adapted to be folded to extend rearward of the plane of said wall, an element of box-like form, having a rear wall and integral side walls, permanently engaged with said front wall at the sides of said opening, said flap having a tongue, and said rear wall having a slit and a downward extending tongue tending to close said slit, the first tongue being received in the slit and detachably engaged by the second tongue, whereby said flap is reliably carried to provide a bottom supporting wall, said rear wall having a movable flap at the top thereof to form a top wall, said side walls having longitudinal scored lines whereby said side walls may be collapsed with the flaps extending substantially parallelly to said front and rear walls, said top flap having a movable abutment relation with said front wall in the top wall position of the former, whereby collapse of the side walls is prevented.

7. A display device including a cardboard 7 box having side walls provided with score lines, and the top and bottom walls being movable for collapsing the box along said score lines, the front wall of the box having indicia, and a source oflight supported at the top of the box to illuminate the said indicia, said top wall having slitted flanges to detachably engage the side walls in said slits with the slits disposed on opposite sides of the score lines to prevent collapse of the side walls and support the top wall thereon.
