IMPROVEMENT IN ENVELOPES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,351, dated J one 27, 1876 application tiled February 21, 1876;

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JUNIUs ROGERS, of Byron, in the county of Ogle, and in the .State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelopes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of an envelope, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 shows my envelope before it is folded. Fig. 2 shows the same partly folded, and Fig. 3 shows it entirely folded.

My envelope is formed of a single sheet of paper, out as shown in Fig. l, and creased to fold as represented by the dotted lines, A being the center piece; B B, the end pieces, which fold inward toward the center; and G O, the top and bottom flaps, which fold over the end pieces 15, and provided at each end with triangular stay-pieces 1*] E, and having mucilage on the edges of the pieces 0 and E, as shown at G. For the purpose of strengthening the corners of the envelope, I attach on the inside, before it is folded, pieces 1) D, of paper or other suitable material, at the points which will form the corners when the envelope is folded. These strengthening-pieces D D may be made round, square, or any other desired shape; or a single strip, D, may be run across the entire crease, and extending over the corners, as shown in Fig. 1. In the ends of one of the end flaps B and both of the side flaps O G are made notches or openings a a, in such a manner that, after the flaps have been folded over to form the envelope, such openings shall render all the flaps accessible to hot wax, and such openings shall enable the melted wax to spread through the interstices and adhere to each face of the several flaps, and thus binding the whole together in a compact mass, and at the same time forming a seal which cannot be scaled off without destroying the envelope or the seal itself. The flaps are to be gummed in the usual manner, except around the openings a, so as to give the wax a chance to spread between the flaps.

If desired, a hacker or detached piece of paper may be used to stop the wax and separate it from the contents of the envelope, and also for use as a strengthening part of the envelope.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The within-described envelope,constructed of a single sheet ofpaper, in the form shown in Fig. 1, with center piece A, end pieces B B, top and bottom flaps (J O, and stay-pieces E, the flaps O (J and one of the side pieces B being provided with the apertures a in their edges, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The strength ening-pieces D or D, attached to the inside of an envelope, for the purposes herein set forth.
