UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HADDENHORST, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN TWlNE-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Nol79,302, dated June 27, 1876; application filed May 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HADDEN- HORST, of Hoboken, Hudson county, New
' Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Twine-Gutter, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved device; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line 00 at, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for cutting twine or cord as it is used for tying up packages in stores and other places, and which is designed to be suspended by and from said twine.
The invention consists of the block made with the longitudinal hole, the recess, and the longitudinal notch or slot, and provided with a string or draw-wire, and a blade to adapt it to be suspended from a cord, and used as hereinafter fully described.
A is the small block, cast or otherwise formed, of any suitable metal, and throughits rear part is formed a longitudinal hole. a to receive the cord B. In the lower part of the block A is formed a recess,.a in which is placed a spring, 0, the end of which projects into a hole, a, so as to press against the cord B, to prevent the device from slipping from it. To the spring 0 is attached a small wire, a, which passes out through a hole in the lower end of block A, so that by pulling upon the said wire 0 the spring 0 may be drawn back, to allow the cord B to be inserted through the hole at The upper end of the block A has a longitudinal slot or deep notch, a formed in it, in the lower part of which is placed a small steel blade, D, in an inclined position. The ends of the blade D are embedded in the block A, upon the opposite sides of the slot a In using the device, the spring 0 is drawn back by the wire 0, the cord B is passed through the hole a, andthe spring 0 is re leased, leaving the device suspended from the said cord B. Then, when a package is to be tied, a sufiicient amount of cord is drawn through the device, the package is tied, and the cord is cut off by drawing it across the edge of the blade 1), leaving the device suspended from the cord, from which it need not be removed until all the cord upon the reel or ball has been used up.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The blocks A, made with the hole (1 the recess a and the slot or notch a and provided with a spring and wire, 0 c, and a blade, D, to adapt it to be suspended from a cord, and used substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM HADDENHORST.
