Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,242, dated June 27, 1876; application filed March 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known' that I, BENJAMIN E. WE'rn- ERBEE,of South Ashburnhaui, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompan ying drawings, forming a part of the same.
The nature of my invention consistsin an improvement in that class of folding chairs in which the seat-frame and rear legs are rigidly united or constructed together, said improvement being in a device which forms a strong bracket attached to the seat-frame, a part of the hinge or pivot device for the union of the back-frame to the seat, and also a part of a toggle, which serves to unite the front legs and arms of the chair to the other parts.
Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same when folded up. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, showing the method of uniting the jointed parts.
In the drawings, A represents the back of the chain. This part is pivoted at O to the part B, which forms the arm and front leg of the chair. A is also pivoted at its lower end, by the bolt E, to the part D, which forms the seat and rear legs of the chair. (See Figs. 1 and 2.)
K is a strong bracket-piece firmly attached, by a screw, H, to the part D. This bracketpiece K serves as a support for the bolt E, which unites the back-piece A with the seatpiece D. (See Fig. 3.) It (the bracket K) also serves as one arm of a toggle, the other arm of which is formed by the piece M, fastened by the pin or rivet L.. The piece M serves to connect and hold. the part 1.), which forms the arm and front leg of the chair, to the other part of the chair.
I claim as my invention In a folding chair, the combination of the baek-piece A, the rear leg D, and the bracket and link-connection K M with the front leg B, all operating together as described, and for the purpose set forth.
