IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No, 179,155, dated June 27, 1876 application filed June 5, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. BROW'N, of Monmouth, ot' the county of Kennebec, of the State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners; and do hereby declare the same to be ful y described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a rear elevation, and Fig. 2a

sectional view, of a window-frame and sashes with my improved sash fasteners applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a top view, Fig. 4 a horizontal section, and Fig. 5 a transverse section, of the fastener. v

In such drawings A denotes the windowframe, and B and G the upper and lower sashes thereof. The sash'fastener is represented as having a bolt-case, a, provided with a bolt, b, upon whose shank is a helical spring, 0, for moving said bolt forward. There extends from the bolt a pivot, d, upon which is placed a friction-roller, e. A triangular cam, f, pro vided with a back stop, 9, arranged with it, as shown, bears against the roller, is arranged in the bolt-case in manner as shown, and is fixed to the end of a rod, h, having upon its other end a knob, t. On pressing upon the knob, so as to force the cam fforward into the bolt-case, the bolt will be crowded back within the case; but on removing the finger from the knob the force of the spring of the bolt will not only advance the bolt, but cause the frictioirroller to move the cam backward until the stop 9 may be in contact with the roller. Each of the sashes is to have a separate fastener, of the kind described, arranged in the window-frame, and with respect to such sash, in manner as represented in Fig. l, and such sash is tobe furnished at its edge, next the fastener, with a series ot'recesses or holes, 70, to receive the bolt, in order for it to hold the sash either closed or more or less open.

A great merit of this sash-fastener is its adaptability to either, and especially to the upper, sash, or capability of being readily applied thereto and to the window-frame.

I claim- The described improved sash-fastener, consisting of the bolt 1), spring 0, canif, stop g, stud or friction-roller e, and the knobbed rod h, all constructed, arranged, and applied to the case (a, substantially as set forth.
