' GARMENT Application filed July 8,
This invention'relates to garment fasteners which are adapted to be used in connection with the button holes or punched holes in a garment and pertains more particularly 6 to that class of fasteners in which awire or strip'of metal or other suitable material is bent to form a relatively flat base, having one or more loops projecting intermediately therefrom through the mentioned holes in the garment, said base being preferably covered by fabric or other coating to conceal the wire therein. Y W a The main objectandfeature of my invention is to provide a fastener of the character indicated Which is readily made from a piece .of wire or. metal strip and which may ---b.e sewed inplace'upon one portion of a garment so as to prevent loss thereof and bring out: the'advantages of the fastener to the'utmost and useful. V I V V Anotherfeatureis' to make such a fastener jfreeufromhinged joints or loose members, and which may instead be bent over the edges of a button hole and have the advantages of fastenersotherwise madeof severalpartsQ A; further feature is to form a strip or wire symmetrically intoafastener so that it partakes of the symmetrical features of a button, i the base of-thelfastener being. also made to --'resemble the base of a button when desired by covering; the same with pads of fabric or ,-coating it with rubber, celluloid or any other poser .or invention will appear: more in detail .as this specification proceeds.

Throughout; the views the same reference -n'umeralsind1cate the fsame or duplicate parts. I Y
It is a common fault of collar buttonsand the like ,that they areYrigidVa-nd press upon the throat or neck in anuncomfortable mark 80. ner, are easily dropped and lost,'-and in the case of buttons made of two; or more parts, same become worn or maladjusted so that they cease-to function properly. It is herein proposed :toeliminate these troubles by having a fastener which in some respects resembles a button, which is fastened tothe garment, and which has the advantages of two orthree partsfasteners without any'of In the practice o fmyinvention 'a piece of metalstrip or. wire, for examp'le; of tinned 'iron, silv. ered copper or the "like maybe bent into a general form as indicated at 1, where afpair'of enveloping branches'or arms 2, 2
form the outline of a'base lying in substantially the same plane-and terminate at their .outer extremities in the curved ends 3, 3. The
' intermediate parts of the wire are formed into iacpair of similar upright loops 5, 5-havi1'1g a low intermediate portion 6 lying between them in the same general plane of the base formed by the branches 2, 2, while the latter connect with the loops by means of the short outer sections 4, 4 which are both in the general plane of the base. These portions 4, 4 are not essential, as the loops can be spread out enough, or a third loop can be added so that they connect directly with the branches 2, 2, or the latter can be drawn inward to meet the loops. 7
Onthe other hand, the fastener. can have but one loop as generally indicated at'17 in Fig. 6, the arms or branche s;being ;here noted 18, 18, terminating in ends 19, 19, and brought inat their other. ends to. form connecting members 20, 20 which are continuous'with'the intermediate loop 21 which they carry.
. Ifthe fastener 1 is again considered, the
same may be applied to a garment instead of a button or other fastener, the loops 5, 5 being then passed through a pair of holes punched for them or through anor'dinary button hole. In Fig. 2 this fastener is thusplaced in position in the neck band end? of garment portion 8 sothat the base formed .by the pa- rts 2, 2, 3, 3, 4,- 4, and 6 are'behind the neck band portion 7 and the .loops 5, 5 pass through the same at the normal front button position, the fastener being then preferably sewed in place. When secured in this position, one-way of concealing the wire'portions forming the base is indicated in Figs. 2- and 3 where a covering flap12 is-arranged to be sewed over the base wires. garment, it could be similarly treated and its base wires thus covered, if desired; 7
However, the loops 5, 5 may now be passed by a user through the button hole 11 in neck band member 9 of the garment portion 10 as indicated in Fig. 3, and if so desired,a collar may be added and the loops also passed through the button holes thereof as through 11.
V ,for example the fastener form 17. In this case, the final operation in usingthe fastener 1 is performed by bending up one loop and bending down the other, presenting the appearance indicated in Fig. 4. The loops in this relation lie rather flat and are unobtrusive, and hold the garment portions securely in assembled relation. In order to again release the garment members, it is obviously but necessary tobend backor straighten the loops into their projecting position as at first, when they will nolonger hold the garment members by the b-uttonholes and they may readily be drawn apart. 7
Ontheother hand, if the fastener form has one loop as at 17,-- the same/may be passed through a smaller hole 23, unless a button hole falready efxistsin garment member 8 in the V neck bandportion 7, and when the neck band portion 9 isplaced over part7 and'the loop If the fastener 17 were secured to the Another fastener may then also be used for the rear of the neck band and collar, say
there passed through another small hole 24 unless a regular button hole like 11 is already made in the member. The loop 21 may be bent horizontally against the neck band portion 9 and will hold the garment members assembled as before in the case of loops 5, 5. The main principle isthe same in both cases, or even where three or four loops would be used.
In order toenhance the appearance and utility of the fastener generally, I prefer also to cover the base with fabric, rubber, celluloi'd'orcomposition. In the case of branches 2, 2 .or ofbranches 18, 18, a flat pad of such material at 13 may be placed under them and I claim 1. A garment fastener formed of Wire or strip including a base portion arranged-to be secured to one of'a .pair of corresponding garment members, and a'plurality of loops projecting intermediately from said base portion and arranged to project through said other garment member and be bent in different directions over the same in order to'hol'd said garment members in secure assembled relations r 2. A garment fastener including a 'wire bent to form a pair of'enveloping branches lying in the same plane generally, a pluralityof loops initially bent upward from said 7 branches in substantial alin'ement',and in-" termediate connecting wire links directly connecting each pair of adjacent loops-and also arranged in substantially thesame 'general plane of said'branches', said-loops being arranged to be simultaneously passed through button holes in'garments and bent independently into individual directions to provide a retaining effect-subsequent to'theint'roduction ofsaid loops" in their initial condition- 3. A. garment fastener'including a wire or strip bent at both ends to'form a, fastener base arranged in one general plane,'.and a loop directly connected intermediately to said base and'initi'ally bent upright "from the same,
said loop being adapted to bejpassed through a button hole in a garment and thereafter 'bent over to provide airetaining'eflect.
' 4. A. garment fastener including -a wire or strip bent at both ends to form a fastener base arranged in one general plane," a loop directly connected intermediately to said base and initially bent upright from V the same, said loop being adapted to be passed through a'button hole in a garment and subsequently bent over to produce a retaining efiect, and
' means to cover and conceal said base.
5. A garment fastener formed of wire or v strip including one or moreloops which are arranged upright upon a base-formed of the ends of said wire orfstrip, said ends being bent about the same generalaxis in the same rotative direction but upon opposite sides of said fastener, said one or more loops being arranged to be bent down upon said base durs ing use, and a covering for said base to con-, ceal said wire ends while exposing said one: -or more loops for manipulation anduseas: retaining means.
6. A garment fastener formed of a wire or' strip whose ends are bent into a pair of en-- velopmg branches so as to constitute a baseadapted to-be secured to one of a pair of' corresponding garment members, a loop directly integral with saidbranches and projecting initially in a substantially upright position therefrom, said loop being arranged to be passed through a button hole in the second ofsaid garment members and subsequently bent over the same in order to pro- Vide a retaining eflect'. V
7. A garment fastener formed of wire or strip including a substantially plane base portion, and an upright intermediate member secured'directly upon said base portion and adapted to be passed through'a garment member and thereafter bent over the same to 4 provide a retaining efi'ect. w
