JEWELRY BOX PAD Filed May 14, 28
Patented Jan. 20, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT Y OFFICE RUDOLPH J. WARNER, or BtfEEALo, NEW YoRK, AssIGNoR T WARNER JEWELRY cAsE COMPANY, OF BUFFALO, NEW YoRx, A coRPoRATIoN OF NEW YORK JEWELRY BOX PAD Application filed May 14, 1928. Serial No. 277,539.
This invention relates to a pad especially adapted for the display of wrist watches or articles of jewelry having a band or chain.
One of its objects is the provision of an inexpensive pad of this kind which can be folded into a small compass to close the box, or unfolded to a more or less inclined posi tion to display a watch or other article.
Another object is to render the pad adjustable by simple means to fit watch bands of different lengths or styles.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open jewelry box containing the improved pad,
showing the latter raised to display position. Figure 2 is a similar View showing the pad folded. Figure 3 is a cross section of the box. Figure 4 is a rear View ofthe elevated pad.
. Figure 5 is a horizontal section of the pad on line 55, Figure 4.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
10 indicates the jewelry box which may be of any suitable construction and which forms no part of my invention. In the example shown, the box has a rectangular recess or chamber 11 of appropriate dimensions adapted to receive the improved pad. This comprises a base member 12 and a display member 13 bent from a single sheet of metal or equivalent material. These members have a covering 14 of velvet or other decorative material. The base may be rectangular and of a size to fit freely into the chamber 11, while the display member may have an ornamental configuration. In the pad shown in the drawing, by way of example, it has an arched upper portion shorter than its lower portion, forming stops or shoulders 15 arranged to support the band or chain of a wrist watch at the proper elevation to fully display it when said member is bent up to a more or less inclined position, as best shown in Figure 1.
- At its ends, above the shoulders 15, the display member is provided on its rear side with lips or tongues 16, preferably formed integral therewith and over which the watchband is adapted to pass. These lips constitute side-extensions which may be'bent substantially parallel with the display member of the pad, with their bights a greater or less distance apart to increase or reduce the effective length of the said member in accordance with the size of the watch-band. For this purpose, the sheet metal is of a gage to permit easy bending of the lips.
- This provision, adapts the pad to all kinds of ribbon, mesh or link-bands or bracelets. A stretchable link-band does not look well when stretched 011 the pad. This improvement permits the pad to be adjusted to snugly receive the hand without stretching it.
As the pad is constructed of thin flexible material, its display member can be easil bent at any desiredangle to the base for e fectively displacing the wrist watch or other article of jewelry, as shown in Figures 1 and 3, or that member can be bent down fiat to permit the cover to be closed, as shown in Figure 2. 1
Being made of a single flexible sheet, the pad can be folded without the use of a hinge of any kind and as the display member is self-bracing, this produces an exceedingly cheap and simple construction.
As the pad is removably seated in the box, it may be taken out and used separately as an easel for displaying a wrist watch or an article of jewelry.
I claim as my invention 1. A jewelry-box pad comprising a base member and a self bracing display member adapted to assume a position fiatwise against the base member or at any desired angle relative thereto, said members being bent from a single sheet of flexible metal, the upper portion of the display member being shorter than its lower portion, forming stop-shouL ders at its ends, and having lips on its rear side above said shoulders and adapted to be bent at different distances from the adjacent ends of the display member to vary the length of the reduced upper portion of the display member.
2. A jewelry-box pad for displaying wrist watches and the like, comprising a base member and a self-bracing display member, said members being relatively foldable and formed from a single sheet of flexible metal, the
display member being bendable against the base member in its non-displaying position and adapted to be swung upwardly at an angle to said base member in its display position, the lower portion of the display memher having lateral extensions forming upwardly facing stop shoulders against which the lower edge of the wrist watch band is adapted to engage and adjustable lips dis- 10 posed immediately above said extension and foldable against the rear side of the display member to Vary the effective width thereof, the folded portion of the lips being adapted to support and receive the looped ends of the wrist watch band. 7 RUDOLPH J. WARNER.
