GEORGE. THOMSON AND JOHN' THOMSON, OE wOODsTOOK, CANADA,
lUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEC JtSsIGNORs OE ONE-THIRD THEIR RIGHT TO JOHN EDWARD THAOHEE,
, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAND-SKIMMERS FOR PLOWS.`
` Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,978, dated June 20, 1876; application tiled Apri14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE THOMSON, of 'the town oi' Woodstock, in the county of OX- ford in the Province ot' Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, and JOHN THOMSON, of the same place above mentioned, plow manufacturers, have invented a uew'and useful Improvement in Land-Skimmers, and the attachment thereof to the colter of a plow, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object ot' our invention is to form a cheap and ready attachment of a landskimmer for the colter of a plow, to Operate slightly in advance vof the mold-board, and in such a manner as to skim the top of the soil of sod, stubble, &c., and to throw it into such a position that it will be entirely covered up' by the swath of the furrow.
The fiist part of this invention relates to a malleable, cast, or wrou ght iron frame, through which a socket is formed to receive the colter of a plow, and onto which the frameis adjusted and secured by means of a set-screw, the
.frame being so constructedA as to form a horn- Shaped blade or anti-choker at the top, preventing the chokinglof stubble or other material under the beam of the plow, the lower portion of the frame forming a plate to the side of the socket, through which there is an oblong hole or Slot, allowing the adjustment of a bolt passing through it, by 'means of which a combined Vn1'old-board and share is securely fastened to the frame. l
Figure l is a side elevation of a plow with the land-skimmer attached to the colter thereof. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the land-skimmer complete, illustrating it more in detail. Fig. 3 is a plan of the frame detached. Fig. 4 is a plan of the combined mold-board and share detached.
Letters of reference denote the several parts of the invention, and the means bywhich they are combined.
a is the colter of a plow. b is the socket in the frame c, through which the colter a passes, and by which means vthe frame cis adjusted and secured thereto by'means ot' the setscrew f. c is the malleable, cast, or wrought-iron fra-me, which can be raised or lowered on the colter o according to the depth the plow is required to run in the soil. d is the combined steel mold-board and share, which is fastened to the frame c by means of the screw-bolt e. e is the screw-bolt above described. fis the set-screw, by means of which the fra-me c can be adjusted and secured to the colter o. g is the anti-choker, combined with, and forming 'part of, the frame c, and so arranged as to prevent stubble or other material from choking the operation of the plow. h is the oblong hole or slot in the frame c, by means of which the bolt e can be so adjusted as to allow the mold-board d to lit securely to any part of the side of t-he colter o.
We are aware that land-skimmers attached to the beam, or otherwise combined with the plow, are in'general use. We are also aware that these are not new; but f We claim as our invention.-
The combination, substantially as specified,l
of the colter, the land-skimmer, and the'antichoker g,
GEORGE THOMSON. JOHN THOMSON.
