AND MESN E ASSIGNMENTS, OHIO.
ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT TO JULIUS L. ANDERSON, OF IRONTON,
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 787,506, dated April 18, 1905. Application filed August 17, 1903. Serial No. 169,777.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD FOWLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedargrove, in the county of alker, in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of my invention is to mount the revolving disk in such a manner that all side draft is eliminated.
Another object is to mount the plow-point in such a relation to the revolving disk that the point will cut off the land side of the concave furrow made by the disk and make the furrow-bottom flat.
A still further object is to improve the means for mounting the landside and the plowpoint on the standard.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the scraper-adjusting attachment. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a plow-standard and journal-bearing. Fig. 4 is adetail perspective view of the plow, parts being broken away. Fig. 5 is a section through the plow-beam and the clamping means for the scraper.
1 is the plow-beam, of I-iron and of approved shape, said beam terminating in a standard 2, brought to a point 3 and with a rearward extension or foot 4, said foot being provided with three bolt-openings 5, While the standard is provided with a series of boltopenings 6.
7 represents the handles of approved pattern secured to the standard by means of straps 8 and 9.
10 is a lug or casting the inner face of which is patterned after the contour of the beam 1, said casting having integral therewith a journal-bearing 11 at the lower end thereof, as shown in Fig. 3. This casting or lug 10 is provided with a series of bolt-openings 12, which register with the series of openings 6 in the standard of the plow. 13 is an oil-cup leading into the journal-bearing 11.
17 is the landside, secured to the foot 4 of the plow-standard by means of the bolt 18.
19 is the plow-point, suitably secured to the point 3 of the standard by means of a suitable 5 In this'connection it will be noted that bolt. the abutting edges of the landside and the plow-point are each provided with a semicircular opening or notch which when brought together form a circular opening through'55 which a bolt is passed, said bolt passing through the central opening 5 in the foot of the plow. The object of this construction is that I am enabled to remove the landside and the plow-point by simply removing the bolt tral bolt supporting the abutting edges of the 5 landside and understood.
20 is the disk of the plow, havinga suitable journal 21 journaled in the journal-bearing plow-point, as will be readily 11, said journal-bearing, as will be seen in 7 Fig. 4, being at such an angle that the disk is held at the proper angle for turning the soil.
The journal-bearing 11 is mounted on one side of the standard 2 and is disposed at such an angle that it will hold the disk on an angle to the line of draft, so that its rear edge is on the other side of the standard. By this means the axis of rotation of the disk is directly beneath the beam and directly in front of the standard, thereby eliminating all side draft by reason of the drag being on both sides of said beam and said standard.
22 is a scraper adapted to keep the surface of the disk clean, said scraper being provided with a handle 23, having a suitable crook 24. 5
This scraper is held in the desired position by means of an eyebolt 25 passing through the beam 1.
26 is a block having a lug 27 on the rear face thereof, adapted to fit in the beam 1, the go face of this block being provided with two cams 28, there being a suitable groove 29 formed between the cams, in which the handle 23 of the scraper is adapted to fit. The
object of the interposed block 26 is to adjust the relative position of the scraper 22 with respect to the disk 20. If it is desired to adjust the scraper close to the disk, the handle 23 of the scraper is moved to one side, whereing the bolts holding it to the series of boltholes 6 in the standard and replacing said bolts after the casting has been lowered the desired extent. From this it will be seen that the life of the disk is materially increased.
It will be seen from Figs. 1 and 4 that the plow-point 19 is just behind the disk 20 and on the land side of the furrow. In this position the disk cuts the track and turns the ground ahead of the point 19, so that there can be no choke or clog against the point 19. One other advantage in positioning the plow-point 19 in the rear of the disk is that said point cuts off a part of the concave furrow turned up by the disk and makes a flatbottom furrow, thus providing a flat footing or footway in the furrow for the plowman.
It will thus be seen that by my invention I have produced a disk plow possessing a number of material points of advantage and one that will be very effective in operation.
The arrangement of the disk herein shown and described is not claimed in this application, as it forms the subject-matter of an application filed by me on March 12, 1904, serially numbered 197 ,87 8.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination in a plow of a plowpoint and a landside abutting one another and each provided with a notch forming a part of a bolt-opening in its abutting edge, and a bolt passing through the bolt-opening thus formed to secure both parts against movement.
2. Ina plow, the combination with a standard and a foot at the lower end thereof, of a plow-point and a landside each provided at one of its edges with a semicircularnotch, a single bolt for securing the landside to the foot, a single boltfor securingthe plow-point to the foot, and a single bolt for both semicircular notches in the abutting edges.
3. In a plow, the combination with the standard, of a plow-point extending in advance of the standard and having a vertical portion secured to one side of the standard and a horizontal portion extending underneath the standard and upon which the lower end of the standard rests, a landside havinga vertical portion secured to the standard in the rear of the plowpoint and a horizontal portion on which the standard rests, the vertical portions and the horizontal portions of the plow-point and the landside respectively forming continuations of one another, and a bolt engaging with the plow-point and with the landside.
i. In a plow, the combination with the standard, of a plow-point secured to the front portion of the standard and upon one side thereof, a landside separate from the plowpoint secured on the same side of the standard and in the rear of the plow-point forming a continuation thereof, and a bolt engaging with the plow-point and with the landside.
The foregoing specification signed this 10th day of August, 1903.
EDWARD FOWLER.
