The drier is provided with a pair of carrier ropes which are disposed in grooves 34, Fig. 4, at one side of the rolls thereof and are passed between and about said rolls and are adapted to engage the lead strip andi carry it automatically through the drier and about the drying rolls thereof. In accordance with this invention, I extend the carrier ropes to the press and cause the lead stripto be engaged by the carrier ropes at the press and to be carried over the pass between the press and the drier by matically through the drier by v the ropes. To this end, a peripherally grooved idler sheave or pulley 36 is disposed at one endy of the roll 28 of the press and is j ournalledv loosely on the axle 38 of said roll. The inner'carrier rope 40 is passed downwardly and over a suitablysupported sheave 42 which is disposed above the pulley 36. Said rope is then passed downwardly over an idler sheave 44 which is disposed between the roll 28 and the upper press roll a and at one sidevof the path of movement of ther paper sheet between said pressroll 20a and the roll 28. The inner carrier rope thence is passed upwardly and about the idler pulley 36V to lie' in the groove; thereof adjacent the roll 28. The rope is then passed over the Y baby drierk 30 and,` thence about and between the drying drier in the usual manner. The outer carrier rope 46 is passed downwardly at the front end of the drier and about an idler sheave48 and thence in an upward direction to the press and about idler sheaves 50 and 52 thereof andv and about an idler sheave 54v which is disposed adjacent the idler sheave 44y downwardly for the inner carrier rope 40. The outer carrler rope is thence passed upwardly in conthe inner carrier ,rope and over the idler pulleyl 36 to lie beside the inner carrier rope in the outside of the groove. The outer rope 46 is thence passed in parallel relation and at as the rope 40 to the baby drier 30 and-about the baby drier and thence to the first drying roll 32 and thence in the usual manner about and between the drying rolls of the drier.
The carrier ropes 40 and 46 are adapted to be separated to provide an opening between them for the lead strip as they pass about their respective sheaves 44 and 54 and toiconverge, thus to grip the lead strip between them, as they pass onto the idler pulley 36 as illustrated inFig. 5. Y

The stronger air blast from the nozzle 58 is adapted tol impinge upon the lead strip as it passes upward from the press roll 20ct and to deflect itlaterally and cause it to enter the opening between the carrier ropes in their pass to the idler pulley 36, thus to cause the lead-strip to be positioned under the innerrope 140 and over theouter rope 46 as shown in Fig. 5. The broad idea of deflecting the lead stripA laterally into the carrier ropes is disclosed inthe copendingapplication of Roy V. llVel-v den Serial No. 197 ,955, filed .lune 25, 1927, which eventuated into Patent No. 1,676,305, dated July 10,1928. The present inventionV is intended as an improvement on the invention setforthin said application inthat in this invention, the lead strip is passed into thecarrier ropes at the press. instead of at the drier. e
The term rope as used in the claims is,- intended to include bands andthe equivalent which operate inthe manner hereinset forth.
We claim:
1. The method of carrying the paper web of a paper making machine away from a sup= porting elementtherefor whici consists in providing a pair of travelling carrier members disposed side by side and spaced apart adjacent the supporting element and direct-V ing opposed blasts of air onto the supporting element on opposite edges ofl the `paper web and in a direction inclined toward 2. opposite edges of the paper Vweb in a direction which is inclined to the line of move-y ment of the paper web and is toward said carrier device, whereby to carry the web to said carrier device.

In a paper making machine', the combination of a press, a drier, a pair'of conjointlyoperable carrier ropes extended from the press to the drier and about and between the drying rolls of the drier,vsaid ropes arranged to engage the paper web and carry it from the press to vand through the drier, and means located at the press arranged to guide the paper web into the engagement of said ropes, including means to direct opposed air blasts against the opposite edges of the paper web in a direction which is inclined to the line of movement of the paper web and is toward said carrier ropes, whereby to carry the web into the engagement of said ropes.
5; In a paper making machine, the combination of a supporting element for the paper web, a pair of cooperating carrier elements arranged to engage the paper web and carry it away from saidV supporting element and means providing opposed .air blasts directed onto said supporting elementy and the paper web thereon to detach the paper webfrom said supporting element, said air blasts also being directed generally in the direction of said carrier elements to guidel the detached paper web into the engagement of said carrier elements.

In a paper making machine, a press having a press roll felt on which the paper webl is carried, a pair of superposed press rolls, paper web reversing means disposed between the paper Web and rolls to reverse the` web and cause it to pass reversed between said press rolls, a drier adapted to receive the paper web from the press, a pair of cooperating carrier elements disposed ad-k jacent the upper press roll and extended from the press to and through the drier and arranged to carry the paper web from the press to the drier and about the drying rolls thereof, and means to direct opposed air blasts onto the upper press roll on'opposite sides of the paper web thereon, to detach the web from said paper press roll, said means also arranged to direct said opposed air blasts generally along the line of movement of the paper web to guide the paper into the engagement of said carrier elements, said means also having provision for providing a stronger blast of air onto the paper web on the side thereof opposite said carrier elements and directed towardsy them whereby to deflect the paper web laterally toward said carrier elements.
