This invention relates to paper making machines and particularly to an apparatus for and method of transferring the moving paper sheet and particularly a lead strip thereof from the last press to the drier and for passing it automatically through the drier and about the drying rolls thereof.
This invention is particularly desirable in machines in which the paper is passed through the last press reversed, although the invention may be used in connection withl machines which do not'reverse the paper.
The driers of some paper making machines `are provided with a pair of cooperating bands or ropes known as Sheahan ropes which extend around the drying rolls of the drier for the vpurpose of gripping the lead strip inserted between the ropes and carrying it automatically through the drier and around the drying rolls thereof. y
It is an ob 'ect of this invention to provide. an apparatus and a method for automatically transferring the lead strip by' mechanical means from the last press to the drier and delivering it into the Sheahan ropes of the drier.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pair of cooperating carrier elements or ropes which extend from the last press tothe drier to grip the paper web or the lead strip thereof at the press and lcarryit over the pass between the press and the drier and deliver it to the drier.
In my copending application with Roy V. lVeldon, Serial No. 214.190, tiled Aug. 19, 1927, the carrier ropes of the drier have been extended to the press and the paper web at the press is delivered into the carrier ropes and is transferred to the drier and is passed around the drying rolls thereof. y
It is an object of this invention to provide a take-over' or carrier system independent of the Vdrier ropes and extended between the press and the drier for the purpose of taking over the lead strip from the press to the drier and for delivering it automatically into the grip of the drier ropes.
A yet further object of the invention is the provision of means for driving the take-over elements between the press and drier so arranged that the elements need be operated only at the time the lead strip is to be carried overv and can be idle at other times.

Fig. 4 is a detail illustrating. the opposed air blasts for detaching the-lead strip from .the upper press roll and' for deflecting it laterally into the bite of the take-over ropes. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail illustrating the clutch mechanism for driving the take-over ropes from a guide roll of the press.
Fig. 6 is a detail showing how the paper web is engaged by the carrier ropes at a drier roll.
As here shown, the press roll felt 10 of the paper making machine is represented as coming from an intermediate set of press rolls, not shown, of the press and passing around a guide roll 14 and carrying upon it .the paper web or a lead strip 16V thereof.
Above the upper pass of the press roll felt is a second press roll felt 18 running around the guide rolls V and between the end pair of superposed press rolls 2() and 20a. The paper web or the lead strip thereof is transferred from the press roll felt 1() to the press roll felt 18 by passing it over the guide rolls 22 and 24 at the point just before the felt 18 passes between the press rolls and 20a. The lead strip is removed from thefelt and moved upwardly about said rolls by suitable air blasts 25 and the guide plate 26. By this method of guiding the paper sheet, it will be observed that the sheet is reversed with relation to the press roll felt, the surface of the paper sheet-in contact with the press roll felt 10 being uppermost while the surface not in contact with the press roll felt 10 is in baby roll 30 thereof. rEhe drier is provided with rope carriers for the lead stripA and y paper web arranged about as shown in the matically through the drier and about the under the downwardly inclined rope 38, thus to be engaged by said ropes as shown in Fig.

The baby rollx30 and the large drying rolls 32, but one of which is here shown, are each formed with a peripheral groove 34, Fig. A6, therein at one end in which a pair of endless carrier ropes 36 and 38 are received side by side. vrlhe rope 36 passes downwardly and about a sheave and thence upwardlyl and around the outside of the groove in the baby drier 30 and thence downwardly tio the outside of the groove in the large -drier roll 32 and subsequent rolls. The rope 38 passes downwardly and at an angle as shown in Fig. 1 into the inner side of the groove of the baby drier and lies adjacent the other rope 36. Said rope 38 then passes in parallel relation with the rope 36 between and about the successive drying rolls of the drier. The lead strip 16 is adapted to be moved onto the babyv drier 30 over the rope 36 thereon and 6 and carried about the baby drier and thence to and about the driving rolls 32.
ln accordance with this invention, takeover ropes independent of the drier ropes-are provided to engage the lead strip at the press and take it over to the drier and deliver it into the bite' of the carrier ropes at the baby drier. To this end, a pulley,42, Fig. 5, is journalled loosely on the axle 44 of the guide roll 28 of the press and is disposed at one end of said roll. Said pulley forms the driving pulley for thetake-over ropes embodying this invention and is provided Wit a clutch connection with said roll.l I
A movable clutch member 46 is slidable axially onvthe axle 44 of said roll 28 under the influence of a pivoted control lever 48 and isA keyed to said axle by the key 50 for conjoint rotation'with said roll. Said movable clutch member is provided with a tapered clutch face 52 which is adapted to engage the internally tapered clutchface 54 of the pulley 42 whereby to establish a driving connection therewith and rotate the pulley at the speed of the. roll 2.8. Said pulley 42 is provided with a peripheral groove 56 therein in which the take-over rope 58is arranged.
Said take over rope 58 is endless and is so arranged that it makes two passes side by side over the pulley 42 which move in the same direction and at the same-speed between the press and the drier for the purpose of carrying the lead strip therebetween. For this purpose, the rope passes over an idler sheave 60 disposed above the pulley 42 and downwardly over `a second sheave 62 disposed between the roll 28 and the upper press roll 20. The rope then passes upwardly in a pass 58a and over the pulley 42 and lies in the outside of the groove therein. The rope is then extended in a pass 58b toward the baby drier and at one side thereof andl about a sheave 64 'disposed ahead of the baby.

The rope thence is directed upwardly in a pass 58c and about the pulley 42 and lies inthe inner side of the groove therein. The rope is then extended toward the drier in a. pass 58d 'which is beside and parallel with the previous pass 58b and passes over a sheave forwardly .of the baby drier 'and above the lower sheave 54 and 56. The rope then passes upwardly over a similar sheave 72 and thence back to 'the press. The sheave 62 at the press is sup. ported by an arm 74 which is pivoted conis connected with the free end of said arm through a flexible cable 78 and serves to urge said arm for movement in acounterclockwise direction, thus .to keep the rope taut.
The passes 581 and 58b are spaced apart to receive the paper web therebetween as it moves 'from the upper press roll 201 and said passes converge toward the pulley 42 thus to grip the paper web or the lead strip therebetween in the manner-illustrated in Fig. 6,
and carry over the lead strip from the press to the drier in the passes 58b and 58d as illustrated in Fig. 2. y
The lead strip is ,detached from the upper press roll 20a-and guided upwardly toward the roll 28 and laterally into the passes 58 and 58 ofthe carrier rope generally as shown in'theabove identified Cram and Weldon appllcatlon. To this end, nozzles 80 and 82 are disposed on opposite sides of the lead strip on the press rolls and are connected by a pipe- 84` to a suitable source ot air pressure -l'or the purpose of directing blasts of air onto the lead strip. Said nozzles 8O and 82 are inclined toward each other and downwardly and'also forwardly in the direction of movementof the lead strip whereby to directopposed blastsof air onto the upper press rll 2Oit and the lead strip thereon to detach the lead strip from the roll and guide it for movement toward the roll 28., The nozzle 80, which is on the side of the lead strip opposite the passes 58a and 58c of the carrier rope. is adapted to discharge a stronger blast than the blast of air issuing from the other nozzle 82, thus to deect the lead strip laterally and between said passes whereby to cause the leadstrip to be engaged by the rope as illuse The carrier rope is adapted to carry the lead strip over to the press in the manner illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The passes 58 and 5Sd of the carrier rope are extended beyond the baby drierso that the lead strip is l caused to move over the baby drier and the' rope carrier 36 thereon and under the rope carrier 38. The lead strip is thus caused `automatically tobe moved into the engagement of the carrier ropes of the drier. lVhen l the lead strip is engaged by the drier ropes,
it is caused either to be pulled out of engagement of the passes 58D and 58 of the takeover rope or to break between the take-over and carrier ropes as the case may be since the 0 drier ropes move at an angle with the takeover ropes. In any event, the paper is automatically transferred from the take over ropes to the carrier ropes of the drier.
By the provision of the clutch drive for V the take-over at the press, the take-over rope can be idle except when it is used for takingl 'the paper over to the drier and thus wear on the take-over rope is minimized.
The term rope as used in the claims is in* tended to include bands and the equivalent,
which operate in the manner herein set forth.
I claim: 1. The method of guiding the paper web of a paper making machine from the press through the drier which consists in engaging the paper web at the press by a carrier device, conducting the paper web by said carrier device from the press to the drier and delivering it automatically kto the engagement 10 of a second carrier device at the drier, and
carrying the paper web by saidsecond earrier device through the drier and around the drier rolls thereof.

The method of guiding, the paper web of a paper making machine from the press through the drier which consists in gripping the paper web at the press between a pair of carrier members, carrying said paper web by said carrier members from the press to the i0 drier, automatically delivering the paper web to the engagement of a second pair of carrier members at the drier and carrying said'paper web by said second pair of carrier `meinbers through the drier and around the drier rolls thereof.'

6. The method of carrying a paper web between two spaced web supporting elements.
which consists in extending'an endless carrier rope between said supporting elements in such manner as to provide two adjacent parallel passes of the rope moving in the same direction and at the same speed between said supporting elements, and ,introducing the paper web between said passes at one element and carrying it by the movement of the rope in said passes over to the other supporting element.
7. The method ofv carrying a paper web between two spaced web supporting elements which consists in extending. an endless carrier rope between said supporting elements in such manner as to provide two adjacent parallel passes of the rope moving in the same direction and at the saniespeed between said supporting elements and introducing the paper web between said passes at one element and carrying it by the movement of the rope in said passes over to the other supporting element, and thereupon detaching the paper web from its engagement with said passes of rope.
8. The method of guiding the paper web of av paper making machine from Vthe press through the drier which consists in gripping the paper web at the press between a pair of carrier members, moving said paper web byl said carrying members across the pass between the press a'nd the drier and automati* cally delivering the paper web at the drier into the engagement of a second pair of carrier members which move in a direction inclined with respect to the. direction of movement of the first pair of carrier members. whereby automatically to detach the body of the paper web from the first carrier members and moving the paper web by said second pair` of carrier members throughthe drier and about the drying rolls thereof.
9. In a paper making machine, the combination of a press, a drier having a web-carrier therefor, and a carrier member extended between the press and the drler and disposed in position to deliver the web automatically.

In a paper making machine, the combination with a plurality of. supporting elements over which the paper web jis adapted to be passed in succession and ,a plurality of carrier elements arranged .to engage and carry the paper web in succession between said elements, one of said carrier elementsl arranged to move the paper web in position to bevengaged by the next ladjacent carrierk element.
13. In a paper making'machine, the4 combination of a press, a drier having a pair of carrier, ropes arranged to carry the paper web through the drier and aroundv the drying rolls thereof, and a air of cooperating take-over members exten ed between the press and the drier and arranged to engage the paper web at the drier and carryit over the drier and deliver it in a posit-ion to be engaged by the carrier ropes of the drier.
14. In a paper making machine, the Combination of a press, a drier having a carrier for taking the paper web'through the drier and yaround the drying rolls thereof, andfa takeover member extended from the press to the drier and beyond .the first drying roll `and the carrier thereatand at one side of said carrier arranged to engage the paper web at the press rand conduct it to the drier and deliver it to the engagement of said carrier at the first drying roll. 15. In a paper making machine, the combination of a press, a drier having a carrier for taking the paper web through the drier and aroundthe drying rolls thereof, and a takeover member for `'carrying the paper web from take-over member including an endless rope arranged in a plurality of loops between the press and' the drier and providing two adjacent parallel passes extended between the press and drier and between which the lpaper web is adapted to be engaged and carried over to the drier.
