UNITED sra'r 'rnomas n. DAVIS, orrninrrnnnconnncrrcnr, AssIeNoa r ummies MAL- LEABLE IRON Co., or BRIDGEPOBT, CO NECTI U A CO PORATION OF CONNECTICUT PARKING sIGN Application filed June "22,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in signs for use upon city streets'for indicating the parking regul'a-I more readily adapt its use to changing con ditions or locations.
A further object is to provide a sign of the class specified which is particularly adapted for attachment to posts or poles such as are commonly used in the streets for other purposes, and whereby the main body or-part of the sign may be more or less permanently secured to the post, while other portions, containing reading matter, which should be changed from time to time, are v made removable forthe substitution of other sign plates containing different reading matter.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides and consists in the con-' struction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims'may be resorted to without departure from the spirit,'or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Similar characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and upon which V Fig. 1 shows a front elevation of one form of my invention as shown applied to a portion of a street pole Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of one end portion of the signwith attachable slgn' plate removed; p
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on l1ne 8-3 1929. Seria1No.372, 883.
of Fig.2 showing the removable sign plate attached; and i I Fig. 4 'ShOWS amodification of the invention illustrating the same applied to a portable {post having but one removable sign plate, The'lnvent'ionas shown in Figs; 1 to 3 in 'cluslve comprises three cast metal members,
so that the'finished cast metal pieceswill in- 7 elude raised and preferably smooth faced letters tofaci'litatethe painting-of the faces in colors contrastingly-different from that of the mam body 0 the sign.
Referringin detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings, 10 representsan upright in the form of an elongated strip or plate-like sign member, haV
ing' raised edge portions 11 and raised letters 12, which latter'may obviously be compiled for the spelling of any appropriate word, as,
for instance, the Word Parking as illustrated in F ig. 1. The upper and lower end portions of this upright as shown in Fig. 1 are of the same special formation which adaptsthe sign for removable attachment to streetposts of varying sizes, and also have means for theremovable support of interchangeable sign plates of any preferred shape or desigmpr'eferably round and oval in cross section; These endportions of the vertical uprights include a-raised base portion 13 having a pocket lt in its underside with ta pered side walls to facilitate the molding of the piece, and further includes aligned diametrically opposed openings 15 and. 16 to receive the end portions of an attaching wire 17 that girdles the street pole 18. These wires have their end portions 19 threaded to receive nuts 20 that shoulder against the outer It will thus be seen that a wire of suitable length may be laid around a pole and its two threaded end portions positioned in the two face of the openings 1 5-15 of the raisedend portions 13.
aligned portions 15 and 16 whereupon the nutsjmay be tightened to draw the wire and secure the upright to the posts. 4
These raised end portions-1313 are further provided With a threaded stud 21, having a square-shoulder 22 to fit thecorresponding- 1y shaped central holein the interchangeable sign plates 23 which are reinovably secured theretoby means of the nnt 24c; These sign plates arepreferably circular-in form, having a raisedbead 25" around their edge portionsand raised letters similar tothose used on the other castings, and are preferably of'a" bowed shape to better conform,,to the-cylindrical face ofthe post.
In; F -ig,, e?- I have shown ,the, invention ;applied to a portable type of sign, which is also adapted to be made oifmalleable iron, and includesQazrlupright:19? of suitable: size and pr ponti ns which may or m y not have upon; itletteringesuch as-the'word Parking, but
l121S- a stud formed pn its upper end similar to the sign show-n1 in Figsgl, '2 and 3;f0r ;the attachment, pt thednterohangeabla sign plates andgalso has openingsfor the wire ends This upright is mounted on a heavy cast metal base 26'construeted like that-p15 thesign shown in Figs, 1', 2 andBand adaptedtolform a no abl i uppontion he p -e n w roeby the latter anditsattached sign maybe moved from placeito place asthe, case may require.
Havingthus described my invention, what I desiretosecure by-LettersPatent is: V
1. A sign of the, classdescribed, comprise ing an; upright having a; raised hollowend portion and-aligned openings. in opposite sides of said hollow portion to' reeeive. Wire ends foritsattaehment to;a p0 st, and'means for securingsign plate to said raisedendportion of the upright. i V
