This invention relates 'to a folding desk. An object of the invention is the production of a desk of the indicated character,
tionery and graphic instruments, which receptacle or repository, will assume an upright position when the desk is opened for use, and when folded, the articles being kept from falling out of the repository, and being held conveniently accessible when the desk is in use.
TheI nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which n Figure 1 is a perspective view of a desk constructed in accordance with the invention, the desk being opened for use.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the desk in folded condition. v
Generally stated the desk of the present invention comprises a top 10, a supporting structure or arrangement 11 connected with and adapted to support the top 10 in a substantially horizontal position for use, and
which is also adapted -to be folded or collapsed, and a receptacle or repository 12 l suspended from or connected vwith the top 10 for sundry articles such as stationery and graphic instruments.
The top10 may be made of any preferred material, and'is of rectangular shape. The structure or arrangement 11 includes a cross block 13 hingedly connected as at 14 to theV underside of the top 10, at or near the middle thereof, yand yhavingV an abutment face 15 which. contacts with the under side of the ytop so as to hold the block 13 at an angle with 192s. vfseriai No. 12613413.,
respect to the top 10. The block 13 has' rig` idly connected therewith legs 16 in spacedk relation, and are alsoconnected together by a cross piece 17. A leg 18 is hingedly connected as at 19 with the cross block 13 sub-l f2.;
stantially centrally of the lower edge. The upper end of the leg 18 has an abutment face 20 which contacts with one side of the block 13 infoneposition of the leg 18. The under side of the top 10 has secured thereto abutmentsl or stops 21. Bracemembers 22 are respectively pivotally connected as at 23 with the legs 16, and are respectively engagcablc with the abutments or stops 21.
One end of the top l0, the far end thereof, has suspended therefrom lthe receptacle or rep`ository12 hereinbefore mentioned. The said'receptacle or repository 12 is hingedly connected as at'24. The hinge connection is such that the repository will always assume an upright position when the desk is open or inset yup condition for use, or when it is folded and not in use, as shown in Fig. 2. The repository 12 `is. open at the top, and it willl be apparent that sundry articles placed'therein-will always be held convenientlyy accessible, and 'will not fall out of the repository,either when settingup the desk for -use or whenrfolding it. v i
When-it is desired to open orset up the desk for use it is only 'necessary to gripthe endof the topy -10 remote from the receptacle orrepository`12, withthe legs 16 and 18 in contactqwith the floor, and then exerting an upward swinging movement to the top 10 the legs 16 and'18 will assume an angular relationship with the abutment face 15 of the block 13 in contact with the under lface of the top10, and the, abutment-face 20 of theleg 18 'in contact with the block 13. The i brace members 22 may then bel'swung respectivelyf into engagement with the abutments or stops 21. At the same time the receptacle or repository 12 will assume an upright position as shown in Fig. 1. The
' or folded Will occupy but comparatively small desk, the brace membersY v22 are Y Erst disengaged from the abutments or stops 21,Where upon the top 10 may be swung on the hinges 14, and `at the same time the leg 18 will swing Y on its hinge, and the receptacle or repository 12 will also swing on its hinges to an upright y posit-ion, ask shown inY Fig. 2. Will therefore beapparent that the desk thus collapsed space when notin use.
If desired the far endoi:I the top I0" on mi* l" the upper surface thereof may be provided, With a suitable holder 25 for accommodating pencilsror pens. The holder 25 is designedy to hold graphic instruments from rolling down .the upper surface of thevtop 410a'nd Will also hold the :instruments thereiny even when the desk is dition.'v u 5 VIY claim: l
