To all whom t may concern: Y
State of TeXas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Convertible Furniture; and I do hereby decla-rethey following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same? This invention relates toimprovements in convertible furniture, and more particularly to such as may be employed for educational purposes. l' y.
One object of my present invention is to provide a simple table construction which shall serve to receive structures composed of building blocks; which maybe also employed as a table or desk capable of storing the building blocks and other devices; which may be also used as a fiat or inclined top desk, and which may be employed for black-board purposes.l
A further object -is to so construct the device that it may be readily converted fromv one type of structure to another, and be stable and substantial in any form to which it may be adjusted.
Vith these and other objects in view th invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the structure in the form of a flat top table. Fig. 2 is a view. showing the device adaptable for use as an inclinedtop desk. Fig. 3 is a view showing the device adaptable for use for black-board purposes, and Fig. 4 is a view showing the de,- vice extended to facilitate the building of various structures with the use of building blocks.
1 represents a table body supported at its.
four corners upon legs 2 which may be removably secured 1nk place by means of screws, and. said legs are suitably braced by means of cross-bars 3` and the longitudinal bar l connecting said cross-bars,-said bracing bars being preferably removably'secu'red in place. To facilitate shipment the legs and braces may be removed and sto-red within thetable body 1. The table body 1 may also serve to receive Va quantity of building blocks and said table body is nora mally closed by means 0f a cover v5, hinged l v l at-one ledge thereto. The cover 5 may con- Be it known that I, EUGENE-M.l BARLER, of San Antonio, in the county of BeX-arand board 6. When the coverv 5 is located over the table body, a flat top table will be formed, vas shown in Fig. 1.
jWhen the cover 5 is elevated so that the black-board .6. shall be disposed in a convenientworling position, as shown in Fig. 3, it .will be sustained in such position by means of a U-shaped support 7 having its parallel members pivotally connected at diametrically opposite points to the edges of Vthe cover 5 near the free end of the latter,--
thecross-bar 8 of said U-shaped support resting on one edge of the table body 1 and prevented from escape therefrom by means of an arm 9 pivotally supported within the table-body. When the cover 5 is closed down upon the table body 1, as shownr in Fig. 1, the arm 9 will be in 'an approximately horizontal position within the table body and the U-shaped support will be caused to embrace the cover 5 so that its parallel members may rest adjacentto the table body (at opposite edges thereof) and the connecting bar 8 be disposed at Vthe front of the table andrest upon the projecting portions of the hinges of the cover.
When it is' desired to use the device as an inclined top desk, the cover 5 will be raised slightly andthe arm 9 will be .disposed in a vertical position so as to support said cover in such inclinedposition.
Whenthe devicefis to be used as means on which to construct building structures, the cover 5 willbe opened to its full throw so as to form ahorizontal extension ofthe table and when in this position it will be `supported by the U-shaped support 7, the
latter having been swung so as to assume a vertical position under the free end of the as the building progresses, thus the scattering of building blocks` over the floor ofV the room will be obviated. It will also be apparent that the table body will constitute a convenient and ready receptacle for the building'blooks when the building is razed,
thus again avoiding the scattering the blocks about the room.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: Y
l. The combination with a table body and legs therefor, of a cover hinged at one edge to said table body forY normally'closing the same, said cover also constituting a blackboard, and a support pivotally attached to said cover and adapted when in one position to sustain the latter in a substantially npright position and When in another positionto sustain said vcover extended in a hori-A 'Y said body, a U-shaped support Vpivoted to and adapted Vto embrace said cover, and an Yarm hinged to the body, said arm adapted to serve as a stop for said support When the cover is elevated and a Ysupport for said cover when the latter is inclined.
3. A convertible article of furniture, cornprising a table forming a receptacle, a cover hinged to said body, said cover also constituting a black-board, a support hinged to said cover and constitutingineans for sustaining Vthe same in a substantially upright and also in a horizontal position, and an arm hinged to the table body and constituting` means' for sustaining said cover in'an inclined posi-tion to form a desk.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this speciiication in the presence' of two subscribing Witnesses. Y
EUGENE M. YBARLER.
