Dec. 30, 1930. C, s` ANDREWS l 1,787,030
ONE-PIEGE Box Filed Feb. l, 1925 ATTORN EY Patented Dec. 30,- 1930 A.UNITED STATESv PATENT lofi-*luca CHAMPE s. ANDREWS, OF NORTH CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, vAesIeNqR'i'ro Rox BLANK CORPORATION, or NRW YORK, N. Y., AcoRPoRA'rIONOrnRLAwaRR lONE-Prison Roxv application ala February 1v, 192s. serial No. 85,138. l
This invention relates to containers, and
more particularly to boxes for holding mer a ,bottom wall with side walls and end walls suitably attached thereto, the side walls and end walls having flaps forconnecting the side walls and end walls together when-the box is formed to shape. The coverwhich may be hingedly connected to a side wall may have'a side flap and end flaps for tuckin within the bodyl when the box is in close position.
In the drawings accompanying and form-v ing part `of this specification, a practical commercial embodiment ofthe invention is disclosed, but as such illustration is primarily for purposes of disclosure. it will be. und'erstoodV that the structure may be modliied in various respects vwithout departure from the broad spirit and scope' of the invention asl hereinafter defined and l v claimed. In the drawings, t Fig. 1 's a perspective ofthe box 1n its formed position with the `cover open showingv details of construction; Y Y s Fig; 2 is a development ofl the blank from which .the box is made, showing the manner in which it is creased and cut in the box mak-- ing machine; and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3.--3 of Fig. 1 showing a detail of construction. In the following description and in` the claims parts will be identied by specific means for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit.
Referring now to the drawing, the box or container according tol the invention may be made from a single piece .of good grade paper board or any other suitable material suitably cut and creased along the dotted lines as illus- A secure the upper 12 respectively at its `upper end which is formed bycreasing the material.
The cover 17 may be secured-to `the side i wall 3 and mayl comprise a cover wall' 13 which is hingedly secured to the sidewall 3.
by creasing the material. The cover 17 may also comprise aside flap 14 and two end flapsv 15" and 16 whichhave their corners rounded to facilitate tucking into the body `1 as hereinafter described morerin detail.
To form the box the sidewalls 3 and 4 and end walls 5 and 6 of the blank are bent upwardly 0n their creases and the side wall fla s 7, 9 and'8, 10 are disposed inside the end Wa ls 5y and 6 respectively. v The end wall flaps 11 and 12 are then bent over to be disposed inside the side wall flaps 7, 9 and 8, 1Q respecf tively. These .flaps may be glued or connected together by suitable adhesive. in any desired manner. It is preferable, however, to
ortionsy only of the side wall aps 7 9 and) 8', 10 to the upper portions onlyk ofthe end walls 5 and 6 respectively as by applying a small amount of glue or other adhesive at 20 in Fig. 3 and to the end wall flaps 11 and 12 respectively as by applying a small amount of glue or other adhesive at 21 =in Fig. 3. This provision allows thebox to be formed from the blank with a lminimum amount of time and expense for applying the f/y glue or other adhesive. n
The side flap llt-and end flaps 15 and 16 ofthe cover may be bent toward each otherat rightangles to the cover wall 13 so that the)r may be easily tucked into the body, thelength or depth ofthe side ilapl/l and 'end flaps 15 `and 16 limiting'thefinward movement of the cover by resting upon the bottom wall 2,- tovhold the cover wa'llf13 in substantial par-V allelism with the bottom wall2.
- It will be understood that the upper edge ofthe side 4 of the body opposite that to i which the cover is hingedly secured may have posed of a single blank, said Acontainer hav-l ing a bottom wall and side-and end walls, said cover extending from and being hinged -on one side Wall, said side walls having side wall flaps on their vertical edges, said end walls havin end wall flaps on their upper edges, said side wall fiaps being disposed between their respective end wallsand end Wall flaps, the upper portions said side Wall flaps, are firmly adhesively secured between said end Walls and said end wall iaps respectively.
2. A` containery and cover therefor composed of a one piece blank, said container comprising a body having a bottom wall and side and end walls attached thereto, said cover extending fromV and being hinged 'onr one side Wall; said side walls having side Wall flaps on their vertical edges, said end walls having end wall aps-on their upper edges,
said side wall flaps being disposed insidev their respective end Walls, said end Wall flaps being bent over their respective side wall flaps, the upper portions only of saidside wall aps having adhesive on both faces, whereby said end Walls and saidfend Wall fiaps may be'secured to said side wall flaps.
3. A container of the class described comprising a body or receptacle,a cover, a tuckin retaining -fiap` for said cover, said body having a front Wall, a back Wall and side ory connected to andend walls, said cover bein extending from said bac wall, .said body and cover being composed of a one piece sheet blank divided into substantially parallel sections deined by creased or folding lines; certain of said sections forming the front, bottom and back walls of the container and other sections forming said cover and said tuck-in flap; folding extensions connected` to the front and back wall sections partly forming the said end walls, extensions from the bottom section foldin `to complete said end walls and folding aps extendin from the latter extensions arranged to fol over an Whereb said container is retained in its assemble condition..
only of said side wall flaps having adhesive on both faces, whereby 4. A container of the class described comprising a body or receptacle, a cover, a tuckin retaining flap for said cover, said body having a front wall, a back wall and side or end walls, said cover bein connected to and extending from said bac wall, said body and cover being composed of a one piece sheet blank divided into substantially arallel sections defined b crease or folding ines; certainofsaid sections formingy the front, bottom and back Walls of the container and other sections forming said cover and said tuck-iii flap; folding extensions connected to the front and back wall sections partly forming the said end walls, extensions from the Abottoni section folding to complete said end Walls, lfolding flaps extending from the latter extensions arran ed to fold over and to be adhesively secure to the end walls whereby said containei' is retained in its assembled condition andsaid folding duced in width so as to avoid spreading of` the adjacent walls of the container.
5. A container ofthe class described comprising a body or receptacle, a cover, a tuckin retaining flap for said cover, said body having a front Wall, a back wall and vside or end walls, said cover being connected' to and extendingfrom said back wall, said body and cover being Lcomposed of a one piece sheet blank having substantially parallel sections defined by creased or'folding lines; certain of said sections forming the front, bottom and back Walls of the container and other sections forming saidcover and .said tuck-in up; front and back wall sections partly forming the said end walls, extensions from the bottomv section folding toA .complete saidr end' walls, folding flaps extending from the latter extensions arran ed to fold overand to be adhesively secure to the end walls whereby said container is retained inl its assembled condition and said cover section having laterally extendin wings or flaps which are arranged to be'inserted in the ends of the container sofas tol completely close the same and provide -additionalf'means for retaining the cover in the closed position. y
